Ive had my 6 month old normal corn snake for bout a month and a half now. I try to handle him as often as possible every week, but find it hard because he is very shy and often hiding and i've heard it isnt good to drag a corn from shelter. When he is out and i do handle him (about 5 sessions each week) he virtually always goes into the strike position and tries to bite. I ignore this behaviour but its been going on in each session of handling for about a month now. Is this normal as he is only small, or could it be anything else? could do with some advice. Thanks Tom
 
Some snakes do take a long time to tame down. Incidentally, as far as I'm aware it's not a problem to remove a snake from its hide unless it's in shed or digesting a meal. I take snakes out of their hides all the time.

You should be aiming to handle this little guy every day (if possible, and except after feeding) for about 5-15 minutes maybe? Try and keep him out until he calms down before putting him back.

Also, don't put him back if he tries to bite or strike. If you do, he'll learn that if he's mean he gets what he wants.

I think everyday is too much, and 5 minutes is a good amount of time. But, thats just my opinion really.
 
Just to be clear, i am ok to remove my hatchling corn from under cover, even in the day? ive heard mixed opinions on this topic in the past so....
 
You might have seen some of my posts about it.

I personally think that if the snake knows it's got a spot where it can go to literally "get away" where it knows that it's safe from the big noisey creature with all those crazy limbs, it will be less nervous overall.

But thinking about it now, I bet a snake's nervousness has more to do with it's overall personality than environmental factors.
