Hatchling help...

This is my first clutch that has hatched for me and I know I should be reading the books but I can't seem to find the answers I want as fast as I want to. When can/should I put water for my hatchlings in their inclosures? Also when should I attempt to feed them? They are about a week old now. I probably shouldn't have bred the snakes if I wasn't as prepared as I could have been. You all are so nice and helpful so I thought I would turn to you all for help. Thanks for your time in reading this.

I put water in their vivs as soon as they are separated.

I would feed them after they shed the first time.

Be prepared to try all the tricks in the book to get the picky eaters to eat. There is a sticky about it written by Nanci. I would do boiled pinks right off the bat. It is used by a lot of breeders and it works wonders.

That's what I do. Separate as they hatch. Each is set up with a water bowl and a toilet paper tube hide, on paper towels. I feed after the whole group has shed. It doesn't hurt to let them get a little hungry. Other people _do_ feed immediately. Last year I tried waiting five days after shedding before feeding, but didn't have any more or less success than feeding the day after shed.

Thanks Nanci. I kept them together for about a day and separated them. I have 3 hatelings all the others are sweet and docile and allow me to pick them up with no fuse except for the occasional tail rattle. They haven't shed yet but I see a few have gone into blue but have not shed. I'll take your advice and wait for them all to shed. Thank you for your help.

I have a hateling. He's now named 'Not' and the only one of the bunch of 13 that I am keeping. But he was a refusal for eating...don't despair if they don't eat. There are lots of tricks to get them to, I still have 3 non eaters but I'm hopeful! They are fairly easy. Good luck and congrats!

Thanks Jillian. They aren't ready to eat yet they are just chilling and hiding in the rolls I gave them and hiding under the bedding. One was interested in the water I was putting in their tank. So far so good. I have one hateling with a really bad attitude the other two just chill out when you have them in your hand but still strike first then allow you to grab them lol

It's doesn't matter what Not is doing he will strike you, changing his water, walking by. But he was a non eater I tried everything, braining, boiling water...had to finally try live. It worked and after two feedings he was on f/t. I like the ones with attitude. Keeps me on my toes haha. Did you only get 3 babies?

No I got 10 out of the 11 that were laid. 3 are hatelings but one is a real hater lol. I think she thinks she is a cotton mouth. She keeps her mouth open and closes it before she strikes.

Haha, must be related to Not. I got lucky he was the only hateling. After you have them feeding you can handle them more and calm him down. I hope. I've had no success with Not but I'm hopeful. What type are they?

Haha, well you have a 50% chance of being right either way. I got all normals out of mine. You should post pics. It's always nice seeing the wee ones. Hatelings or not. Are you keeping any of them?

:wavey:At first, my hatchlings all thought they could fly ... and tried. Rattled tails, bit, whipped around. They are toughies, for which I am grateful for.
After eating their first meal, they began to mellow out. And now after eating twice, calm right down when I pick them up for viv. cleaning.
I suggest reading as much as you can about hatchling feeding & care. There is a lot of good information on this site. And experienced breeders have shared volumes in many threads here.
You never know when something unexpected might occur, like a non feeder. When that happened with one of mine, I already knew about Nancy's boiled pinky trick & it worked & I kept my sanity. Good luck with your little "wormies"!

I'll try to I just need to upload the pictures. My mom is allowing my sister to keep one. She have taken to 2 of them. 1 and 4 she just loves those special for some reason. She said she kinda wishes they were the albino but none have struck her fancy. After their first feeding we will see. I think my mom knows I'm harboring a few other snakes in my room so she isn't allowing me to keep any lol.

I have a few of those lol. Thinking they can fly and zoom away. I like the one who thinks she is cotton mouth. They haven't shed yet so I'm not to worried. Until it comes to feeding I'm ok with them being the way they are. Squirmy little wormies
