Hatchlings in melamine vivs.

viktoria333

Want some more!!!
I have two hatchling amels fast approaching two months.I was wondering when I could let them into thier vivs?I now have two melamine vivs,36 by 15 by 15,with sliding glass doors?is there a rule that hatchlings have to be kept in a itty bitty plastic container? If this is so,how long will it be before I can "release" them? :shrugs:

I have had my snake in the viv from day one. He(could be a she) was given to me as a gift for my birthday from my two daughters. He was in a small plastic cage from the pet store. I merely put him in the 10 gal. viv. He had no problems. So I would say now would be absolutely fine.

Yeah ... just go for it.

As long as the temps are good, and there are plenty hides, they'll be fine.

:)

!!!!!!!!!!
IMO you should keep them out of any viv with sliding glass doors until they get a little size on them. You see, I used to have this sweet little anery named ozzy...

I had the gap between the front doors taken care of too. There are to many ways for the little buggers to get out of that kind of cage. :(

I have been getting things ready for thier vivs since I first got them, been saving the toilet roll tubes and I got a lovely hollow cork log I have been busy sawing up and boiling, should have enough for about 6 hides in each viv,the only and most imprtant thing I don't have yet is a thermostat..I am in hesitation because I want to use a red light for my viewing purposes and I was wondering whether I can plug both my heat mat and light into a dimmer therm?Or will I have to get separate therms for this purpose? In which case I would need four thermostats? At the moment they are in containers on a heat mat inside thier viv I have a thermometer in the substrate which is reading 87 in each, there isn't much of a variant in temps at the moment because of the weather, which is the reason why I wanted to get them into thier vivs so there would be more of a gradient in temperature. As soon as I'm sure what to get then I'm off to get it.So far,so good, but I need that thermostat!

36X15X15 is a nice size enclosure for an adult and well planned for. I would put the hatchlings in there but watch them for significant signs of stress. If they have plenty of hides an no huge open spaces between hides they should be fine.

As for controlling the temperatures, a thermostat on the heat mats is highly recommended (as you know). In that size cage a 15Watt or maybe even a 25Watt red globe will not increase the temps hugely, it certainly is not enough to warm the entire enclosure (if there is some sort of ventilation near the top). You can check this easily with your thermometer.

You "could" get away with using just one thermostat to control both UTH's by plugging both into the one thermostat and having the probe on one UTH, however it is better to be safe and use two, one in each cage.

Personally I would go with two thermostats (one in each cage) to controll the UTH's and a 15 Watt red lamp independent of these, but place this as close to being directly above the UTH as possible. This way the directed radiant heat will influence the UTH probe as well, just to safe guard against over heating the enclosure. This along with closely monitoring the temps with a thermometer will go a long way to having healthy temps.

I was thinking along the same lines as you then!thanks for the imput.I'll get plain old matstats, and just use the light independantly for viewing, not as a heat source.[oh and for poop spotting!]They are doing very well indeed,I am very pleased to have them. What is the max temperature for the warm side? Both seem to favour thier cold hides at the minute so am wondering whether the mat on its own is too warm but I have only about a third of thier boxes on the mat and three hides warm, warmish and cool.I would have got them bigger vivs but I had to have them made to fit as we got next to no room in this sardine tin of a house!

I aim for temps of 84-85F warm, and no lower than 76F cool. The warm side IMO is the most critical, as long as they can warm up they will move to their comfortable location with addequate hides

Going back to the viv scenario,I'll have to get those folder ends or whatever they're called to make the glass doors more secure and safe[one got stuck in the runner and I ended up cutting myself on it] saw that on another thread today posted by colinmcc I thought was a damn good idea as i was going to use electrical insulating tape because the glass is very sharp on the inside door..I have plenty of hides as i said so a trip to office world no doubt! Thanks again for the info!V
