he shed...

norbert03

norbert and aelfric
again and last night i picked him up to make sure there was no left over skin anywhere on his body, i also examed the shed and noticed that it didn't appear to be complete so i put norbie in a bowl with slightly less than luke warm water and let him swim around for about seven minutes. when i picked him up i noticed the skin was still there so i tried to help it off with my fingers, but off it would not come...easily. i didn't want to hurt him so i left it and put him back into the bath for a few more minutes...i still saw some of it when i took him out again...but he was cranky so i let it go for the night. what should i do? will the skin just fall off eventually or must i remove it with my hands? also, should a snake be fed shortly following a shed? could temperature problems in the tank be causing the difficulty he's having with coming out of his skin?

:poke:

If all of the skin doesn't come off after a few days since it started shedding, then i would recommend taking the rest of the skin off for it. I've found that what works the best is to first get a damp paper towel. Let the snake crawl through the paper towel as you hold it and rub the paper towel on it to try to loosen the skin up. Then, gently pull the rest of the skin off--It should come off pretty easily, so don't force it. Be careful when getting it off of the tip of the tail so that you dont break it.
Temperature extremes could possibly be the reason why it didn't shed completely. Also, if the container its in is not moist enough, that could cause it.
I would recommend waiting about 2-3 days after it completely sheds to feed it so it can recover.

Good luck!

I agree with tim88. One of our snakes had a terrible shed the last time and I used a wet paper towel. I let the snake do all the work. I just made it a small effort for her to crawl through the paper towel by providing some resistance. The whole process took abut 20 minutes or so and it easily removed all the skin without me having to pull at it. Like I said, I Iet the snake do all the work.

Cheers,
Jason
