heat above and below substrate

I use FlexWatt heat tape under my tank. I also have about 3" of aspen bedding for substrate since my snake like's to burrow. Where should I be taking my temps from? If I keep the bottom under the substrate at 88 degrees it will be about 75 at the top of the substrate. I can turn it up so above the aspen is warmer, but then it gets WAY hot under the bedding (100's). I like to use alot of bedding because she likes burrowing so much, before this i just used a heat lamp and sometimes she was under the sub, sometimes on top. I just installed the flexwatt about 5 hours ago. Will the cage warm up over time? Any thoughts?

p.s. I use a digital temperature gun to take all my readings.

I like to know the max temp in the viv. I put the temp probe on top of the heater, under the substrate. Like you said, I know if the max is 87°F at the heater it is about 83-84°F in my snakes warm hide.

Hey D_rock, The infrared temp gun is a great idea, one gun could quickly check all the warm and cool hides, I saw one online for $25, certainly cheaper than a multitude of heat sensors with potentially inaccurate readings or even failure. I was thinking of using 2 sensors in each hide (one for back up) but I like the gun idea better.

Be sure you check out the heat gun. With the cheaper model guns the further away you are the bigger the spot it senses and wont give you accurate readings unless your right over top of where you want to test, which isn't really a big deal, just something to keep in mind. I use 2 probe thermometers both my snakes vivs so i can always have a visual reference and i use the gun to double check as well as check temps of water when i change it or soak the snake, inside the hide, the heat tape itself, the wiring, etc. There great. good luck man.
