heat lamp or mat???

if the UTH will only bring the temp up to 78 ( in the daytime) is it okay to use a daylamp??

I use the blue zoomed lamp ( 60 watt) for about 12-13 hours a day, he has 2 hides and a lot of leaves the tank about 70% floor shade. In the winter I plan on using a red light at night because it'll be freezing on the water when i go back to school.

78 in the daytime? Where are you measuring your temp? If you are using a UTH you should be measuring the temp on the glass on the other side of the UTH. If the UTH is on the bottom of the tank on the outside, your temp probe should be on the bottom of the tank on the inside.

I use a UTH for Iris and a heat lamp for Wisteria.
I know, bad me but they were out of the size I needed when we bought her set up. Will remedy that when we go to the city next time. LOL, boy does that sound hickish.
Iris' first UTH didnt heat up over 76-78 during the day either and my thermometer is at bottom on the inside near it.

Hmm. My UTH will easily top 100 if I don't keep it on the rheostat. One of these days I will upgrade to a thermostat.

I used a heat lamp AND the UTH in the winter, only because my house was so cold my snake would had to have spent all his time under the aspen to keep his body warm. The air in his cage would have been about 70 without it. I used the heat lamp (it was one of those red heat-emitting bulbs) to warm the air in the tank up to 80. The thermostat probe sits on the glass over the UTH pad, so it would make sure the tank glass would never get above 84-85 or so. With the heat lamp on the same side of the tank as the UTH, he still had a warm/cool gradient.

Now that it's summer I have taken the heat lamp down and only rely on the UTH and it's perfect. I wish I didn't have to use the lamp in the winter because I like the natural light much more.

set up

I have 3 gauges inside of the tank ( cause one came with a humidity thingy thing) two are at the 2 bottom ends of the tank. Of the two is right by the water bowl and the other is touching the bottom glass of the tank ( right above the UTH ). I live in the basement, and I actually get cold myself during the day and night time. Without the zoomed day light its 78 degrees, but with it its exactly on 86. My light is a 60watt blue light and it has a dimmer on it. I usually dim it down as the sun starts to go down. I also provided lots of leaves in in the tank to ensure that it is fairly shady

I live in south louisiana ( almost as south as u can get ) and during the day dont run my ac in my room cuz Im usually not home so I leave Whiskey be without his light.. and the temp usually stays between 82 to 87 degrees in the day. at night when I get off I put my ac on and I have a heat lamp with a night time reptile light 60watt its like a black light that I leave on for him.. which he I never see him under it.. I put the lamp on one side of the tank and he is usually on the side without...
