Heat lamp placement?

I am looking to buy a glass vivarium off someone that has kept corn snakes in it will a heat mat. I want to use an over head heat lamp. The viv has a mesh top and a metal bar the runs acroos the top. Can I rest the lamp on top of the mesh? Can it be clamped to the bar?

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Is there any particular reason why you would substitute the mat with a lamp?FWIW, lamps aren't the best method to heat a snakes enclosure.

Just a couple of things to think about....

1) Basking spots are still available without using an overheat lamp.

2) Heat lamps will quickly kill most plants due to the intensity of the heat.

3) Lamps overdry the air inside the enclosure in most climates, potentially leading to shedding problems for the encased reptiles.

I see. I'm very much in the research stage at the moment so am still working things out - thanks for your advice!

I've been reading the Art Of Keeping Snakes, which advocates a "naturalistic" approach to vivarium design and it mentions heat lamps.

Would under soil heat pads not kill plant roots?

What would you recommend as a heat source for a planted corn snake tank? I assume that corns like a fairly arrid substrate compared to tropical snakes?

I plan to run the vivarium snake-free for a month or so before adding a corn so any errors will not affect the little fella!
