As far as i know, and I'm no expert, but in general there is no real need to use heatlamps for cornsnakes. You can if you wish, but a friend of mine has kept snakes for years and never uses them for his snakes (for his lizards yes, but not snakes) and I don't use them either. However others may have other ideas.

oh ok thanks so much.....i guess that i dont really need one unless the snake is really cold.
thanks again

If you have to use a heat lamp... you can use a lower wattage regular bulb~ incandescent~ (50 watt or whatever watts your heat bulb was)
but for my corn I only use a heat mat too :)

i use heat lamps. you can use just a regular 50 or 60 watt light bulb til you get a new "reptile light". if you have a uth you'll probably be ok tho.

It all depend on what your room temp is if you need a bulb or not. Remember uth only heats the very bottom of the tank. Imagine beeing in a really cold room with nothing but floor heathing. If your room is chilly i would recommend you using both.

I have kept snakes in an unheated loft room in the north of England for years, using only UTH. They feed well, breed well, and i`ve never had a problem.
Tough things these corns and adapt really well.

so if i make my own viv

how can i incorperate a heat mat?? as i'm making it out of M.D.F with glass sliding doors?? suppose i could make a glass bottom?? what does anyone think
