Heat mat problems...

My cornsnake Dennis, has been borrowing under his heat mat. The first time he did it we read our books on keeping cornsnakes and it says to tape the heat mat down. So we did and he didn't go under there anymore. When we went to the pet shop he said you shouldn't do this because it could injure him. So we stopped. But now my dad says we should tape it down again. What should we do? I don't want to hurt him... Is there any other way of preventing him going under there?
 
The heat mat should really be on the outside of your snake's viv. That is why you will commonly see it referred to as an under tank heater (UTH). You can tape it to the outside bottom of your viv to avoid this problem.
 
Additionally, tape should not be in the viv or any place where your snake can come into contact with it. Tape can cause some serious damage to a snake's scales.
