my corns home is wooden and i use a heat mat aspen on top but should i put a sheet of news paper over the top of the heat mat and then aspen on top of the paper

thanks

I asked the same thing a few weeks ago. What kind of wooden enclosure do you have your snake in? Something you might want to consider, unless this is a custom or kit wooden cage for the snake is this... Untreated wood is generally not suitable for snakes because it is abrasive and is not easily disinfected. Treated lumber contains many toxic chemicals which make it completely unsuitable for for snakes and any reptiles (yes, y'all, I have been doing MUCH homework) The best enclosures are well ventilated and have smooth, nonporous surfaces that are easy to disinfect...
As far as the heating pad, it needs to be on the OUTSIDE of the cage, never inside. Snakes can be electrocuted or burned if you have a heat pad inside the cage. I have mine in a 55 gallon vivarium and the heat pad is under the tank (and only at one end) and I regulate the heat with a dimmer switch so it doesn't get too hot. I have a thin layer of newspaper just over the bottom of the tank and then the aspen but all you really need is your aspen and make sure the heat pad is outside the tank and not too hot. :)

right,i'm no expert, but i've been told differently to above and have my set up as follows.
i have a ready made wooden viv.i have a heat mat over a third of it and over that i have newspaper. i then have my substrate which is a bark.
this is how my very reputable local reptile shop told me to do it.

no way any person should know not to do that.....what if your snake/reptile burrows into the heat pad enjoys its warmth and stays there a burns itself ????

think about what could happen mate this is SERIOUS for the snake/reptile

sid my corn is 3 and they told me what youve just said thats how he has been set up since they had him every site you read says so many different things but i did read to do what you have said

No, you should really never have your heat mat inside the cage. NO herpetologist will tell you it is safe to do in any circumstance. My vet is a reptile specialist and is on the executive board for herpetology here. He says to never put the heating pad inside the cage because this can lead to accidental electrocution and belly burns. He has written several books on keeping reptiles and it is stated in them many times.

~Read through some of the other threads about heating~

My brother studied herpetology for 20 years and he never put the heat pads inside the cage. It is ALWAYS recommended that you put the heat pad underneath the viv. I did read on one site where a guy built a custom cage (he was housing pythons) and put the pad on the bottom on the inside but then actually built another floor just above the heat pad so that there was no way the snake could come in to contact with that heat pad but the heat pad was close enough to the raised floor to keep the snake warm.

This is a picture from the book showing a belly burn on a snake that laid on a heat mat that was wrongfully placed inside the vivarium. This is why everyone says not to put it inside the cage. This poor snake just wanted warmth and he paid the price for his owner not having the correct heating for him..
