Heat Mats, cover 1/3, 2/3, 1/2 or what?

Ok im reading a lot of mixed information here. I originally, ever since day 1 of my corn have been told that it should be 1/3 heated, and 2/3 for the gradient. But reading on the Habistat booklet that came with my new heatmat, and on their site it says that it should cover between 1/2 - 2/3 of the tank. Now I can understand this and it seems more reasonable than just 1/3 heated, but is it true?

I bought a 17"x 11" mat for a 4' x 1.5' tank. This is larger than 1/3, but to me it still looks too small, so I either go for the 23" x 11" or the 29" x 11".

17" - 1/3 covered
23" - 1/2 covered
29" - 2/3 covered

Im thinking to get the 29", I think it would be best, but I dont want to spend more money and get the wrong size, so I ask you, do YOU use 1/3, 1/2 or 2/3 heated with your mats?

The tank is 4' long and 1.5' wide.

Thanks, Stuart.

I'll say 1/3, Ive never had a problem with using smaller mats as long as it is big enough for the snake to lay over it. A hide over the warm spot will encourage the snake to go there and feel safe. I think heating 2/3 of a tank would be overkill, for one thing I like to have the water stay cooler because warm water would be a breeding ground for bacteria, and a 2/3 heated tank with the water on the cool side doesn't leave much room for the snake to hang out on the cooler side of the tank.

Agreed, 1/3 of the tank is all the size that you need for the heating element. The one you already have will work just fine.
