heat pads and burrowing

I know that there has been a lot of discussion about heat pads lately but...I just got a Repti therm UTH heat pad for my snakies and was wondering...

- I'm using a lightweight substrate right now (shredded cardboard); if I put down carpet how do you keep the snakes from burrowing underneath it?!?

- And when you put the heat pad underneath the tank, how high do you need the tank raised?

mine tank sits on cinder blocks right now...

any help would be great - thanks :)

I have 3 tanks that I use for display and I use aspen over cage carpet and they never go under the cage carpet. They burrow around in the aspen. If the tank/cage is warm enough they don't need to seek out that spot that might be too warm:) You can always plug your uth into a rheostat and control how much heat they are getting that way.

The little feet that came with the uth are all that is needed for the height adjustment. You don't want heat building up under the glass, it will crack. If you want it to sit higher then use what ever you like to get the desired height:)
