Heat source-- lamp question..

I am trying to setup my 5 gallon tank with a warmer side and a cooler side. I have a small undertank heat pad, that I keep to the farthest side of the tank.. only a tiny bit of it is under her hide log.
I've been checking the ground and making sure it isn't too hot. The heat is going through glass and some newspaper.. so its warm to touch on the surface.
I didn't think the actual air in the tank was warming.. it felt like just the ground was warm.. and nothing else.
So I have this desk lamp.. and I put a 25watt red light in it and put the lamp over part of the warm side of the habitat.

It's been kind of cold lately because it just started to get overcast and rainy again, I am worried about keeping her warm.
The last I checked the heat side was at 84-85 and the cooler side is at 72 right now.

But my real question is.. is that heat lamp a good idea ? It is low wattage.. so i can even touch the bulb with out getting burnt.. and it's letting off a warm heat.. nothing too hot.
But.. is the red light hurtful to snakes eyes ? Does it have to be a "special" kind of bulb ? Or a certain colour ?
Or is this ok ?

Here is a picture of the current setup:

Snakes don't see the red light, but you might want to put it on a timer so that it goes off at night. I have not been turning on my heat lamp lately as my tank temps on the warm side are staying in the 80's very nicely without it. Only the heat pad. Sounds like it's fine though. I only turn my lamps off at night to mimic normal cooling and darkness that occurs at night.

Once it gets warmer I know I won't need the lamp.
I will definatley turn it off at night though.. thanks =)
