If I have a Heat Rock in my tank, do I need a Heat Lamp also?? I have one 6 month old male in there. Thanks

if you have a snake then a heat rock can burn them if they lay on it. this is what i have been told and what i have read. i suggest a heat lamp.

Heat rock are not good for corn snake. They are too hot and will burn your snake. Heat lamp tend to dry them out too much too. I would suggest a under tank heater.

Lennycorn has it exactly right. The heat rock will burn your snake. An under-the-tank (uth) heater is your best bet. Tell us about your set up.

The heat rock is bad for the snake. I have a friend who's reptiles were burnt on a heat rock. He did not realize what was hurting them until too late.
I suggest using the heat rock for decoration only and getting a under the tank heater.

What if I put a layer of aspen over the heat rock. When I do that, it doesn't get as hot and it gives the same effect as if a heat pad was under the tank. How does this sound?

corns burrow under the aspen, so it wouldn't guarantee no burns

From what I understand... Heat rock are just too hot for corn snakes.
Even when using a UTH, it's suggested to regulate the temperatures it produces.

Heat rocks do get way too hot for snakes, not just corns. You would need a heat regulating device on it to keep it from severely burning your snake. A UTH, as already mentioned would be your best bet. Even a UTH, however, needs some sort of heat regulation on them. Without a rheostat or thermostat, mine get up to 130'.

get rid of the heat rock and get yourself a uth and a heat lamp if necessary.
you do not want to burn your snake and they will lay on it for to long

If you are new to snakes i suggest you listen to the guys in hear, there is a huge wealth of knowledge and experience on offer.

Heat rocks and any reptiles just don't go. The petshops in my local area will refuse to sell them. They don't look that good either. A under tank heater is the best, make sure it only covers about a third of under the tank.

I also use a 40watt reflective bulb in the tank because in scotland during winter its chilly and i live in a old house so i need the bulb to maintain the correct heat.

See if you can take the heat rock back and exchange it for a uth. I don't know why they even sell heat rocks. :angry01: I've never heard of a herp that its good for. Corns do burrow a lot, so if its under the bedding they will still get burned.
