Heating Concerns

Maybe I'm just nervous as a new corn owner, but the heating thing has me concerned. I have a piece on Flexwatt on a rheostat taped to the underside of the tank. I have a couple of layers of newspaper and then about 1" of aspen bedding on top of that. The stick-on thermometer (at a little below substrate level) shows between 82-88* from morning until afternoon. I have about 1/4-1/2" of space between the cage and the desk it sits on. I reached under the tank and the flexwatt was too hot to keep my hand on for more than a few seconds. I have to keep the rheostat at about 3/4 on to keep the temp. Should the tape be that hot? Am I just paranoid? Any help appreciated!

just my 2 cents

I am a new corn owner as well but it sounds like you have a good temp. I hear it told again and again that about 85 f is the goal. If you don't have Kathy Loves book I highly recommend you get it. There is everything you could need to know in there. Best of luck.

YOu should be fine, my UTH's are very warm and my corns never seem to go directly on it. I think you're doing great as far as temp goes.

What is your temp on the cool side?

Rainey,

The cool side is between 72-76*, which is about 10 degrees cooler than the warm side as the day heats up in the afternoon.

you're good to go, looks like you have a decent heating gradient.

Also, the substrate which is right on top of your UTH is a fair bit warmer than the air above it. just something to watch out for.

What I do if I notice that it's getting a bit warm right on top of the UTH is I just make the aspen a bit thicker and that makes it more bareable for Katie and Kassie!
