Heating, electric bill.

Hey guys so all of my snakes have heat pads but the electric bill has raised 100$ since i got my snakes and i was wondering is there an alternative to heat pads like making a rack system and insulating my closet and running a space heater like an hour a day to keep my closet like 85 degrees all the time? or how can i make some type of little shed that holds heat really well because where i live in the winter (now) its like 30 degrees but slowly getting warmer and warmer. Any ideas i'm only 13 14 in may so i plan on getting a job and buying a shed or something that's insulated and having a space heater on a timer or something?

$100/month extra just for UTH's?
For the cost of the shed, heaters, racks, etc.....Wouldn't it just be better to pay the $100/month difference over winter? Otherwise I would sell a snake or 5 to counter the cost of maintaining your collection.
Congrats on being so into a hobby and responsible at that age though!

Yeah, i think i'm gonna sell my pastel baby ball and my juvi honduran milk

$100? That seems really steep.

I run 7 racks with flexwatt, 5 UTH, and a space heater in an older house and my bill only changed $20 or less.

That $100 seems to not be coming from just your snakes. How many do you have in all?

I've got 5 all with lamps and a uth, possibly part of the increase is from the house heater? my mom runs it quite a bit and we all use the computers quite a bit. My friends dad is complaining about his bill aswell, and he only had 1 uth running and his dad makes over 60$ an hour

Seems steep to me. I'm running 14 racks, 7 UTHs, a lizard viv with a BIG UTH and lights, plus I have lights for the house, outside and in, on timers so they are on even when I'm not using them, not to mention a big pile of electronics that are always sucking down the power whether they are on or not. My electric bill this month for that plus my regular electricity use for heat/AC (yes, I needed both in one month) was $95...

BUT- my stuff is all on thermostats...

Count up how many watts each thing draws, and how many hours they are on, then look at your electric bill and see how much electricity is per kilowatt hour and figure out exactly how much they are costing you.

I just did the math and my pads are taking up less than 10 dollars but our bill is in the 200's.. time to investigate

100 watts 24 hours a day = approx $10 extra a month. When I was using lamps and pads an space heaters my electric bill for that building was $250 a month in winter. with heat tape it's Less then $40.

So i should ditch the pads and pick up a thermo and some flexwatt?

With only 5? You could build a rack and use flexwatt. It will cut your costs in the long run but you'll need quite a bit to build the rack and buy the heat tape. I have a lot more snakes lol so it was costing me a lot more. Plus I was heating a big building instead of say, a closet. But yes a thermostat will help either way.

XD when i get a job and start paying for the food etc i will get more snakes but with my allowance i can only afford to feed 5

It's good that you know your limits! :)

You can build the rack little by little or even use pre-made bookshelves. Check the DYI section for ideas!
