Heating Lamp

First I like to say Hello to everyone I am a newbie snake owner. I just got a corn snake today. I have a heating lamp 60 watts on the one side that keeping the tempature around 85. I would like to know how much I should leave the lamp on?

i have my heat lamps hooked up to thermostats. they're set to keep the cage 83 on the hot side( i don't use any artificial heat for the other side of the tank and it stays at about 76). if you use a thermostat your heat lamp will only come on when it needs to. thermostats are a wonderful thing in my opinion.

Hi Haines. Just wanted to check - do you have a UTH as well? If your lamp is the only source of heat, then it shouldn't be switched off at all.

Right now it is the only heat source I have. I did buy UTH if you mean under tank heater but I can't install because it sitting on a counter top. I was under the impression that the heat is to fluctuate. So when the light is on it is 85(Sunrise to Sunset like Spirit said) on the hot side and at night when it is off it drops to 70. Kel, what you are saying it should stay at 85 the all the time?

A UTH is not essential if you live somewhere warm like Arizona, but heat IS essential for proper digestion.

I left mine off until mid November when it started getting cold outside, and in the summer, I'll probably leave the light off 24/7 (it's much brighter in here during the summer), and just use the UTH (or use just the light and turn it off at night, but the UTH is so much easier).
