Heating/Light Help.

R.W.

Call me Richard
Okay, heres the deal. I have an adult okeetee corn in a 20 gallon tank with aspen substrate. I moved the tank upstairs today and while I was doing so decided to replace the uth, an activity long past due. I removed it to find that the glass had fractured in a few places and will be getting her a new tank tomorrow, shops closed now... Anyway, I was thinking about tryiing a heating lamp. What type of light should I use? I have in my posession both a 50 watt and a 75 watt IR bulb with a clamp lamp. Should I use these and if I can, can they be left on during the day? Are there any suggestions on light/heating? I keep the room temp. around 75-77 F

Could I just shine an IR bulb into one side of the cage during the day to keep the temperature between 80 and 85 for that side. Also, can one hide be placed on the side under the lamp? I have a hide for the warm side and one for the cool side. Can I leave the lamp on 24/7 or shoiuld I turn it off at night.
Could I use a uv lamp just for lighting the tank for better sight/asthetics, or should the light in the room be enough? I'vve been using heating pads for as long as I can remember, but have always found lamps to be less of a hassle for some of my other pets.

If it just gonna be until tomorrow, I would not add the light. You cant control the heat coming off the light. That could create new problems.

I have had a couple of power outages during the winter where the temp in my house fell to well below 70* and it has never caused any problems.

I'm thinking about going long term with the light. Would I need to use a heating pad on the same side as the light? Like, use the pad during the day, then turn it of and use the lamp at night? Or would the lamp by itself work?

I dont use heat pads... I use heat lights (except for my baby snakes) and they do just fine. The way you adjust the temp is by changeing the bulb -- either a higher bulb watt or lower watt depending on the heat you need and how far it has to go into the tank. I use 50's during the summer and 75's during the winter. I find the lights easier to use myself... but maybe because I also have lizards and have to have the lights for them? Just easier for me :)

I too keep lizards, or well A lizard. Bearded dragon, and this is why the light thing appealed to me. Easy access and adjustment.

So, I should basically set the tank up the same way as I would with the UTH?

Why not just use a thermostat/rheostat with the uth, instead of having the light and not being able to control the temps. :shrugs:

I use the lights because I trust them more. I have had many dif kinds of snakes and used them on them all and it works for me. :) I do agree that useing lights isnt everyones 'cup of tea' but it does work for me :)

I set them up with the light to one side to make a warm side and a cool side. I do have to change the bulb during seasonal changes but know that ahead of time so no biggie. hides on both sides.. for me, I just make sure the hide on the warm side isnt directly under the light... the water is in the middle but to one side... from what I have seen the set up is the same as if you had a uth... I guess its just an individual thing... which you prefer... :shrugs:

Shuold/could I set the lamp dirctly on to the screen top, or would it be better to use the clamp to elevate it slighty?

that depends on your snake :) most of mine are fine just setting on the screen top but if your snake likes to climb or is able to get up to the light you will want to have it abit above the screen to prevent a burn :)

Hi R.W.
I also use the IF red heat bulbs for my snakes. I too have the clamp light setting right on the screen. That light is on 24/7. Mine are in a 29 gals and on the side with the heat bulb there is nothing tall enough for them to get to the screen over the light. The hides on that side on not dirctly under the light. There is open space right under the light so they can lay there if they feel the need. I also keep two digitals with probes in the tank with one on the cold side and one on the warm side. I can see my snakes and beardies all the time and glance at the temps frequently.
I also have a uv fluorescent light i can put on if i want to watch the snakes. It is long enough that once i take the locked screen tops off i can lay the light across the top so i can see to clean and so forth. The clamp light i can just clamp to the top side while i am in the tank. Works for me
One day i also plan to get thermastats to hook the lights into to help set the temps at all times. I'll proably still glance tho out of habit... lol
Good luck with your set up and snake/s.....

I actually found a light that has a dimmer on it. So I can pinpoint the temperature pretty good. I highly reccomend one of them.

For corns,I'd use a UTH with a therm myself. But you can do whatever you want.If you do use the lamp I would highly reccomend using a screw on clamp(not the springy clamp type).I use them on all my tanks that have lamps just to be safe.I'ts very easy for your dog or cat or kids to knock the lamp off and start a fire.
