Heating & Lighting issue

I've had cornsnakes before and used a uth and a "daylight" bulb on the warm side of the viv during the day, shutting the light off at night and they did just fine. However, since I've been on here, and gotten my new batch of '04s, I've been a little conflicted over the light & uth vs just uth issue. Now, I like my house really cool, sometimes in the winter it is actually about 68-71 degrees. Even in the summer I keep it at about 72. I've been using a uth AND daylight bulbs during the day, and the uth AND a nighttime bulb at night. I have a thermometer laying on the bottom where the uth is (under cage carpet, the uth, not the thermometer) and the temp is reading 84. The cool side reads 74-76. These temps usually go down about 4-6 degrees at night.
Usually everybody comes out at night and cruises around, but the other day, my amel spent almost the entire day on his branch under the light only getting down to lay half on the cool side and half on the cage carpet. Since then, he has not been out at night even, nor have my other 2 butter mots. It has gotten a little cooler here so I put a tshirt over 3/4 of the screen tops to keep the heat in.
My question is (after all this ranting, sorry): Am I keeping them too warm? Is this why they're starting to spend all their time in their cool hides?

If that's cool, then my house is plain out cold. It's 54 in here right now, and 83 in the snake's tank. Lucky snake. lol

I haven't a clue why they're doing this, but my snake has been doing the same thing for about 2 weeks now. Always under the cool hide. No idea why.

OMG Spirit! Where do you live?? My husband and kids are always complaining about how cold it is in here. I, on the other hand wear shorts until it snows! LOL

Wow, that is cold spirit. I keep it cool in my house too. But I've noticed that my male spends most of his time under the water dish. The temp on the cool side is about 71. So I switched from a 100 watt bulb to a 60 watt one, figuring he was warm and liked it cool. It took the night time temp to 76 on the warm side. When I woke up the next day he was sitting on top of the silk plant about 4 inches from the red light bulb. So I went back to the way his cage was. And even though he spends most of his time under the cool part, he does like the hot side once in a while.

My female is the opposite, she tends to spend most of her time under the hide in the warm part. But I have noticed that the past 2 days she's been under the water dish on the cool side during the day.

Yeah, the thermomestat clicks on between 10 and 15 in my room, but the wall one says 54 in the living room. It's just easier (and cheaper) for us to use blankets and take baths (we don't pay for hot water) if we're cold.

Max however, lives the life of luxury. I'm actaully jealous of my snake. lol

I might try turning off the UTH though... he just NEVER uses that hide, and if he does, he's out in under 30 minutes and over to the cool side.

Between 10 and 15 DEGREES???? Spirit, I have to say, you beat me when it comes to liking it cold!

I'm pretty sure he means Degrees Celsiuis. 8-P

Crazy American neighbours, when will you learn! Just kidding.

I don't know Michael, it says the living room is at 54, that would be 129 degrees farenheit according to a temp converter online. WHEW!!!!

LOL! 54F is 12C. It feels warmer in here now though, but I haven't checked. I'd say it's closer to 60/16 in here now. Give or take. But I just came in from outside where it's rainy and cold(er), so I'm sure all my neighbors (apartment) have their heat cranked up too. hehe

If I'm cold, I just take a nice long hot bath then grab a blanket. Works like a charm.

And why do people always think I'm a guy? What's that about??

Thanks for clearing that up Spirit, I thought you were talking farenheit. And for the record, I've read alot of your posts and knew you were a GIRL!!! You go with your bad cold self!!! LOL :crazy02:

Friends of mine have told me I'm "a gay man trapped in a lesbian's body"... whatever that means. I don't LOOK like a guy, but online I get mistaken as one ALL THE DAMN TIME. Someone said "he means" (regarding the temps I mentioned), so I assumed he was referring to me. Reflex action. LOL

Bad cold self...

I really don't understand how the mistake can be made, you have offered to knit Paul (Pcar) booties for his new baby. What man would do that???? Not my husband certainly!!! And the name "Spirit"? What man would have that as his ID name??? I thought it was self explanatory!!!

Apperently not. But I'm pretty tame on this site. Most women irritate me to no end. Even me, sometimes. As soon as I start getting "girly", it's time for a night out with the boys.

I'd make a terrible lesbian. lol

Yes the bath and blankets do work. I prefer it cooler at night for sleeping. I hate sleeping in the heat. What also works is a nice hot cup of tea, hot chocolate. But to really warm up Irish Coffee is the best.

And for the record, I didn't think you were a guy either. The screen name was the first clue. And most guys don't like baths. BTW.. I'm female too. People often mistake Jean for a guy.
