Heating question

Pet Corn Snake

Hey guys, just watching Sabrina, and i noticed the heatmat is too hot for her, she keeps flinching away from it, there is also some plastic plants on top that I'm worried might melt, she does have a heating bulb, its not protected but i don't think it ever has been so she probably knows by now not to go near it, anyways should i leave the heat bulb on all night with the mat off, or leave the bulb off with the mat on with risk of meltage and burnage? sounds like a silly question i know but for all i know the bulb could go in the middle of the night, sorting her set-up up properly tomorrow, any suggestions?

also the reason i cant remove the plastic of the mat is because there is limited access in the tank, only a small opening on one side, this is the main reason I'm changing her to Damien's Viv, because its big, and got lots of access, what do you guys think?

What's the temp on the heatmat? Is it controlled by thermostat?
not controlled by a thermostat, and not got a thermometer, I could use Damien's, but like i say, its really really limited access, i don't even think my arm would reach down there, the only way would be to remove the lid, witch just look us about 30Min's getting securely taped down, (my mum worries to much) LOL

It's not too much of a problem, eather way she will get heat, I guess he's been using the uncontrolled heatmat for all her life so another night wont be too much trouble, will it?

wait, I could use a double connector on my thermostat, but my thermostat only covers 500W witch Damien's is like 200W i think, but then I have no idea about Sabrina's! :/

Can you post a couple of pictures, George? In any case, unless she's just eaten I'd turn off the unregulated heat until you can sort controlling it out in the morning

Well its not like she needs it to be on right now if she's not digesting a meal.
If you can't hook it up to a thermostat I would turn it off untill you can find away to at least check it.
If it's so hot that she's flinching away from it, it's certianly too hot.

thanks guys, well shes laying under the heat lamp now, I think she may be asleep, I'll be up late tonight, So i'll just leave the lamp on, even (if) in an emergancy that the light cut out, I'm sure my room would be warm enough to keep her (warm) without going cold.. my rooms rather small with lots of items, so it keeps its fair share of heat.. what you guys think?

just thought i would ask you guys, the last thing i want is my new baby burning itself : )

If your weather's anything like mine tonight, she'll be fine overnight, I've got all the windows open to cool it down here

yea, its been one of those (windy but hot) days :grin01:

Well thats what i have done, and I'll let her settle now, do you guys think changing her viv will be okay just 1 day after getting her? (lol i ask the silliest questions but if you don't ask, you'll never find out)

Well that could go both ways.
It could either really stress her out because she's trying to calm down and you mess things up...or...it could be better to change it now then to wait a week and upset her routine worse :shrugs:

Because the viv she's in now isn't ideal, personally I'd change her tomorrow, then leave her a week to settle before feeding her.

thank you, acording to the lady she has not eaten for 2-3 weeks, so waiting another week, will that be okay? she is a big snake!

I'll see what happens tomorrow, but i think i will be changing her viv, the one she is in now is about ready for a clean, and is hard to acess also not very (keep the snake in the viv) safe..

Due to their breeding urges, my big boys are averging a feed every 3 weeks or so without getting any smaller, so she should be fine :)

since this thread is up, i'd also like to ask everyone how to make a 1 mat thermostat to be used on 2 mats, because of the probe, were do i put it?

Ahh wait you need both heat pads and heat mats?

nope, just a heat mat will do, but you need a thurmostat, I currentally only have one, but two tanks that need one, so I need some suggestions about maybe using the one for two mats.. I'm sure i'll sort things out in the morning :p
