Heating suggestions?

Pop quiz hot shot.

If you wanted to raise the abmient temps in a glass aquarium (with a metal reptile lid) without using a lamp or portable heater, how would you go about doing that?

WHAT DO YOU DO? What do you do..?

Stop being cheap and invest in flexwatt and a good thermostat???

What do I win??

I know nothing about flexwatt. I can use it with a glass tank? Does it just "stick" to the back? How does the thermostat plug into it (I was looking at them tonight)? Explain please.

Edit: Never mind. I'm searching the forums. :)

The flexwatt strip just sits on top of your tabletop, under the tank. (You can also control it manually with a rheostat/dimmer.)

You just solder an extension cord with a male end to the tape and plug it into the thermostat's plug. Easy as 1,2,3.

They also sell solderless clip connectors that do the job just as easily.

So basically I just wasted $40 on a UTH? lol

The UTH is fine, it's the ambient temps on the cool side I'm having a problem with. But how would something UNDER the tank control the ambient temps on a glass tank with a screen?

hmmm...

Ummmmm D-uh? But then wouldn't it just be cheaper to get a 2nd UTH for the cool side?? Don't forget I live in an igloo. The substrate is REALLY warm over the UTH, but the cool side... Yeah, high 40's without a lamp. Not good at ALL.

The flexwatt and other supplies would be about the same price as another heat mat, plus you would be able to control the temp.

Someone just suggested tin foil. It's UGLY, but it's worth a try... summers are fine here (and the light gets unplugged). It's just way too cold right now, which is why I use the light with the UTH... For next winter though, I'm DEFINITELY going flexwatt.

This is my concern though (with the UTH). I tested this out on the 40 gallon (36x18) before I got a second snake. I can get a steady 95 on the UTH (11x17), and 50-55 on the cool side.

Flexwatt will give me a better gradient though, right? I mean 10 degrees is good... 40 is NOT. lol

The Flexwatt will be one temp, you just don't run it all the way from end to end. It can be placed under the back edge, creating a thermograde from back to front instead of side to side.

Hmmm... I'm definitely going to look into this for the 40 gallon. The 25 is perfect temps, but it's that damn ambient thing that's getting me with the 40.

And it doesn't affect humidity like a light would? (I assume it would have to if it puts off heat...)

Thanks, Gary. :)

Hey spirit, is it that your humidity is already very low. If not you can use a lamp along with a lamp dimmer and a black/red or blue light over the cool side. Only drawback is u may have to refill the water bowl daily
