hi, i'm Rob. kustom kulture artist, Stray dawg designs. i have a 6yr old son who is very much into reptiles. he is always bringing home books. so i took him to an expo last weekend where he held every possible snake and really loved a okeetee. so his deal is if he makes it from now til mmay15th expo with no bad notes from school we will get him a corn.
i tried a search after reading a few post about some people having some issues with babies and my question is.. for a 6 year old who is very at ease handling ad will surely want to be handling his new pet. which would be better a baby or a little older snake?? thanks for any tips.

Hi Rob, and welcome to the forum,

When your a first timer it can be a bit daunting, but by the sounds of it your son has the confidence to handle snakes which sometimes for some is an issue

I buy my corn's about 4 months old onwards, and I read their feeding and shedding history to make sure there is no problems and that it is healthy and eats regularly etc

An juvenile or adult will be more tame, but then have a lesser life span , so if your son wants one that grows with him then a baby is suitable

Also adults can grow up to 5ft-6ft which for a 6 yr old could be a bit of struggle for handling

I suggest 4 month old onwards with good feeding history and shedding history, and have a read of the caresheet on this forum as this will help you also.

Please read this post Cornsnake FAQ Setup post

and have a look at this caresheet

Hello and welcome! For a six old, I'd probably go with a yearling. It will be a bit bigger and easier to handle, should be tamer but not full grown yet, which could be a bit difficult for a young child to handle.

thanks all.. i'm sure i will just go ahead and start with setting things up. he is pretty excited, and i am as well. of course now he also wants me to paint him a new skateboard with a corn snake design, lol.
have a great weekend!

Welcome to the forums :)

FWIW, I have a seven-year-old daughter who helps with our snakes...we have four yearlings (all bought as hatchlings), a subadult and two adults. She is equally at ease handling any of them, but she's most confident with the largest of the hatchlings (the snake weighs about 50g currently, so it's not a little one, which she always worried she would drop), but not like one of our 300g adults.

If you're going to an expo, I would suggest if possible that your son hold a few different snakes of different sizes/ages to see what he's most comfortable with. I would have suggested a yearling or so...they're a bit calmer than young hatchlings.

Welcome to the site. Lots of people on here with great info and will help you with any questions you may have. I am new too and believe me, I have learned so much and do so every day. If it weren't for these people, my snakes would not be as happy as they are. Thanks everyone.
