Hello everyone, I am a first time Corn Snake owner! I bought the snake, Rosie, from a friend of mine who is soon moving to Italy and cant have snakes. She is just about a little under a year old and I LOVE HER! I have always wanted a Corn and I finally had the chance.
Attached is a picture of her, let me know what you think! Also If yall didn't mind I had a few questions.

1. Based on her/his size, would you agree that she is around a year old?

2.Also I know that these snakes require a heating mat, however due to the worries of my old folks (parents) I am using a heat lamp during the day to keep her at a constant of about 77-80 degrees and turn it off at night for about 75 degrees. My question is if I didn't use the heat lamp at all the cage would be about 73-76 the whole day, is that acceptable or safe for Rosie?

Many Thanks! :)

Hey Rudy! I'm not too far from you in Huntsville, Texas. I actually grew up in Houston, near the Aldine area.

I know here in Texas it gets HOT, most the time I don't even need a UTH or light during the day because my house stays around 75-84 degrees in this Texas weather!

Why won't they let you get a UTH? Are they worried it's going to catch-fire? I've had WAY more problems with those hot basking lights catching things on fire than any UTH, especially with a rheostat or thermostat.

I would say the ambient temperatures are safe, but she needs a hot spot for digestion around 80-84 degrees.

As for her age, it's hard to tell by the picture.

She is VERY gorgeous though and I would love to see more pictures! :]

(Btw, we have the same log-hide, and if that's an ExoTerra water dish--I have that too!)

Hello and Welcome! Rosie is beautiful...

Heat mats for reptiles are designed to be on all the time, so they're quite safe as long as they're used correctly. With a thermostat holding the temp in the mid-80s, you'll notice it barely feels warm to you (since it's lower than our body temperature).

hey i have that same kind of snake (Bellatrix) and that water dish, personally i think that you don't need heating lamp, uth etc. and that i believe is a 1 year old snake

I agree, if you live in Texas, a UTH isn't needed for most of the year...

I use mine for the winter and that's pretty much it.

Welcome to the site :wavey:

Just like anything with a mouth can bite, anything that produces heat can malfunction and catch fire, including the coffee pot, the stove or even the TV.

I have no guess on age as snakes all grow at different rates. Your Rosie is adorable though!
