Well, my name is Brian and I am a first time corn snake owner. I bought the snake for my little brother... but he isn't showing much interest so it's slowly becoming mine. I haven't owned a snake in years so I am having to relearn a lot of things here but I am getting there.

I'm not entirely sure of the sex yet, right now I am referring to the snake as a female; she has not been named yet, waiting on the little brother to do that.

So far I have had her for about a week. I originally went to buy a king snake, but they had already sold him. so I saw this girl and just fell in love.

On the way home she decided it was a good idea to get out of the box/bag combo they rigged up so she couldn't escape... So, there I am driving home with a brand new corn snake in my hand trying no to drop her or hurt her and stay on the road at the same time. I wasn't able to pull over for a good 5 minutes... in that time I had the music on (Wasn't able to turn it off while keeping hold of her and stay on the road.) and was on the freeway. I finally pulled over got her back in the box and made it home just in time for her to poke her head out as I pulled up.

I walk in with her wrapped around my wrist like a watch with this empty box in my hand. I call to my little brother and hand him the box (this was a surprise for him but he had been wanting a snake) he took one look inside and well, was completely confused about why I handed him and empty box. he then saw what was wrapped around my wrist and I handed her to him. As he went around to show her off people started to get loud... I'm standing there thinking to myself this is going to end badly. We had a friend visiting who is "slightly" afraid of snakes, so ofcourse she got loud the snake freaked out and struck at my brother and dangled from his arm for a few seconds. I reach over and take the snake and head up to his room and begin setting up the vivarium. Two hours later the snake is gone...

The search begins (this is also where my brother seems to have lost interest, along with the bite. he hasn't held her since...) we look for a good 2 hours before we have up. a few days later I go and open the window to cool his room down a little. and guess who is sitting between the glass panes looking at me... I work her out set her back in the cage only to have her disappear again within minutes. Now I know she didn't sneak out while I was closing the cage; so I take everything out and look into her little log hide thing. And sure enough I see a little head poke out of a hole where there is a hollow spot. a spot she isn't supposed to be able to get to.

That lead me to believe that we had actually let her out the first time...

After a night and half a day she still hadn't come out of there so...

I scored along the sides and broke it open to get her out (risky I know) she still wouldn't come out of there I sat it on my desk and let her sit there for about 2 hours and still not coming out.

I found a little bent pole to work her out. she was not happy about this but it worked.

the next day I am holding her I walk downstairs sit down and watch some television... bad idea, the show got loud real quick. she bolted, I reached down scooped her up and strike she got me. After she did that she calmed down while I took her up and set her in her vivarium to calm down for a bit.

Today. I was holding her no problem. still very skittish, I took her to my older brother and let him hold her for a while. she was all over him, but she bolted across his desk and down the back. he grabbed and and strike, bit him. after that she calmed down for a few minutes, then we put her away.

That's my story of the unnamed corn snake. I'll try to get more pictures soon. I believe her to be a snow diffusion. I could be wrong though.

These picture do her no justice. I Will use the good camera tomorrow. she is quite pink.

Hello and Welcome!

I could be wrong, but I don't think she is a snow. Snows normally have red/pink eyes.

Look more like a possible Lavender to me, but I am still new and still learning ID's. I could be wrong, as each snake varies a bit.

Others that know more will post. If you can get better pictures, post them in the photo gallery section. More members will see it and help ID it. :)

Again, Welcome!

she is gorgeous!!

My recommendation - being a new snake owner as well, and from what I've learned here - Please leave her alone for at least 2-3 days. I peeked in a my 2 new ones that I got this week - had them in storage totes with holes in the top. One day Ghostie was gone. So, I was thankful I had checked. Thank God I found him. You have to be SO careful that there are no spots for escape. I think my tote lid hadn't latched right even though I swear I latched it but I think it's a bad tote so I'm not using it for snakes anymore.

It sounds to me like your baby has been thru a lot! Getting out while coming home, having major stress when she did get home, getting lost, etc. She needs to be left alone in her viv or tote, whatever you are using. I might peek just to make sure she is still here but give her a rest, she's probably very stressed out and needs time to get used to her new home without being bothered. that's the advice I've been given. It is very hard! PS - they can also rattle their tails! I had one do it yesterday and I'd read about it but never had any of mine do it.

She will be fine after she adjusts. When you get her out, try moving very slow, I try to pet them a little before I pick them up. I don't think people realize how stressed out snakes get because you can't really see it. they look fine, there fore you should be able to pick them up, but a few days of rest will do her good! I got my 2 new ones Tuesday and the both ate last night so that was good.

I love here color!

Agreeing with Kathy, we do recommend no handling for 3-5 days. This allows the baby to get good and comfortable with her new home.

As far as morph, she is not a snow. She looks like a lavender blood. I would like to see better pictures after she has had time to calm down. She looks like she was a good find.

Well, it's a little too late to be leaving her alone today. I already got some pictures of her lol.

I'll try leaving her be to calm down for a few days, she has had quite the stressful entrance into the family.

I have been looking at different morphs ever since I got her and not once have I come across a lavender blood. but that is indeed her.

I remember the "Specialist" at petsmart gave me some list of morphs that she was but it was nothing close to a lavender blood... she said rose something or another... but I looked up those and it didn't seem to be her.

WOW She is a petsmart snake. Most of the time I find out that what it takes to be a reptile specialist at petsmart is just to be not afraid to touch the snakes. Very rarely do they know anything about the snakes.

Shoot in that case I should go apply for a job there lol.

I certainly hope so lol. just got a few new things for her home, (I'm going to feel stupid calling lil no name a her if it turns out to be male.) so hopefully she calms down a bit. she seems to like the changes a lot though.

I'd say that's a good petshop find!

I agree too that petshops don't always know what they are talking about unless the specific person you speak with have snakes themselves.

I was in Pet Supplies Plus and the girl said they can't order by morph, they get what they get and I'm not even sure if they know what they have when they do get it.

PS - pet shops are an expensive place to buy snakes so if you are interested in more, try to find a breeder and they will be cheaper. I've ended up ordering nice snakes here and the shipping is high but I know what snake I'm getting and if you happen to find 2 snakes from a breeder, it'll save shipping per snake.

another thought that no one told me (learned it here) is that after your snake eats you should not hold it for 2-3 days until it's digested it's food. The girl I got them from had just fed them the day i got them and she didn't mention that to me.

Well, I got her from Petsmart for about $50 and no shipping cost. so after looking around it seems I got a good deal on her. The same morphs seem to be selling on average $150-$300 plus shipping.

But once she gets out of her viv she calms down significantly. it's just a bit of a trick getting her out of there.

That's not bad, my petsmart sells corns for $70.

My snakes don't love me picking them up but they dont get upset with me. They might try to hide but I get them and they are fine. Or sometimes they just stay curled up and I pick them up that way. My new ones are still shy.

Yea, she was on sale for some reason... also the oldest one available. which is probably why she was on sale

You found THAT beauty at PetsMart? Wow!

I have been coveting a Plasma and I STILL don't own one. She/he looks like a LavBlood (Lavender Blood/Lavender Diffused/Plasma) to me.

Beautiful little thing. Congrats and welcome to the forums :)

Lol, looks like I might need to look into breeding when he/she (and when I figure out which one it is) comes of age.
