Yep the reason is..They are cheap! does your thermostat have a digital readout?
 
my thurmostat is very accurate because its from habistat, and there products are VERY good, I dont keep my stick on thurmomature at the side of my tank, I keep it right next to the thurmostat probe inside the tank.

I have used them for a year and never ever had any temp problems, although I'am considering the didgital thurmomature I dont think they are 100% needed, the stick on thurmomatures work fine IMO.
