Help ! Falling snakes

Hello my corn snakes continue to hide around the rim of their tanks and everytime i walk by to look at them i see them fall. My concern is that by falling from the top can they cause internal damage to themselves ?

Also why are they hiding at the top of the tank ? They have a hot side and a cold side but both of them rather hide right at the top ?

They are trying to find a way out. Plus they love tight spaces and they love to wedge themselves around the top of the viv.

That is why it is VERY important that the viv is secure so they cannot escape.

As far as them falling, mine do it all the time and have for as long as I have had them. Give them plenty of aspen (or whatever you use) to fall on and they will be fine.

Howdy and welcome to the boards!

As for hanging out on the lip of the cage, a lot of hatchlings do that. I don't think it's them hiding so much as it is them trying to find a way out! Two of mine spent a lot of time on the cage rim until they could no longer fit, or decided it was no longer worth the effort.

I think they will be okay falling from that short distance. Do you have substrate to cushion the fall? Like aspen or carefresh? Either way, they should be okay and they'll eventually stop hanging out up there. :)

Right now im using newspaper stacked about 12 sheets. I was eager to get them in their new vivs. So far they have fallen onto their hides and in their water.
Do i have to keep their water in water bowl at warm temp?

Water should be at room temp. It's generally kept at the cool end, to minimise water loss by evaporation which can cause humidity problems.

Don't worry about them falling such a small height. They are pretty much designed to handle falls, as in the wild they fall out of trees all the time.

My seven month old hypo can't really fit in the lip of the viv anymore so she quite hanging up there, but my newest Okeetee is up there all the time! And he falls off when he tries to turn around or cut the corners when he's moving to another side of the viv. Nothing to worry about - just a little heart jolt when you see your baby fall.

 Yeah, I always see corns falling from trees.

ROFL! No, no....just wishing that corns were actually arboreal and DID fall out of trees!

Oh lordy, mine did this regularly until he was an adult, as soon as he fell he'd get back up and try again. Now he's got so big that he literally can't fit on the lip but he still occasionally tries, when he's adventuring.

It scares the life out of you (especially in the night - THUD!) but you'll be pleased to hear that after 10 years, mine hasn't injured himself this way yet.

Well im glad it isnt only me but after feeding them last night i found both of them back on top of their tanks tummy full ! haah

Maybe if you feed them a bigger meal they'll be too full to do that? JUST KIDDING!

My caramel girl presently has been doing the same thing Shy did as a youngster, trying to stretch herself upside down across the screen top of her tank in a defiance of gravity. I don't think the behavior is an escape behaviior because there isn't any concentrated interest in checking the edges of the screen, just in going up and stretching out across it.

Caramella, my caramel girl, will be stretched out upside down across the underside of her tank's screen top, with her head and tail hanging down at either end for a very short period of time before ... THUMP! down she goes. I will look up and say " Gravity got you again, huh!" She will go right back to trying to achieve it again.

When both Caramella and Shy as a youngster started doing this, they first started going straight up the side of their tanks, trying to balance more and more of their body with less and less of their tail on the floor. Then they started working on seeing how far they could get across the screen and how much of their tail they could get off the floor before gravity caught up with them. Unfortunately, I haven't ever been lucky enough to have the camera on at the time one of them did this and by the time I could get the camera out and turned on, gravity had already sent the serpentine gymnast back to the floor.

Shy stopped doing it after she was able to achieve it easily (or perhaps got too big to want to challenge herself this way.)
