Help Help, Live Rats Or Mice????

OH PLEASE HELP
Yesterday went to the store to buy 3 fuzzy mice, they didn't have any, the guy showed me some baby (newborn) rats that looked small enough for my snake. He said that my snake SSSpikes would have no problem killing them and eating them. Even though my snake always eats frozen pinkies or frozen fuzzies. NEVER LIVE

I put them in the tank last night and my snake - who has never struck or bit anything in his life, turned into a mad man, he hissed, bit, struck and etc. etc. But never killed them or constricted them, went in this morning and they are still alive. (snake is snuggled up in his hide)

My question: What is the difference between live or frozen? Mouse or Rat?

Tomorrow when I get home (I am a firefighter and work 24 hours today) I will kill the rats for him - he is such a sweet boy I really don't think he knows how to kill.

Thanks for any feed back

Melody

He may not recognize the rat as food  they smell different. Not all snakes will switch their food. My Rat snake will eat everything! So far my corn just eats mice. That also includes "fancy mice" they apparently do not smell the same either. There are companies that deal in bulk frozen rodents they deliver to your house and you keep them for 6-8 months in the freezer. (Rodentpro.com) I was having the same problem with getting food when I needed it. I have 6 snakes of different ages.
Maybe he's going into shed about half my snakes refuse food before a shed. And sometimes my snakes will simply not eat if I'm watching  (that doesn't happen too often anymore).
Also- There are many reason's to feed frozen/ thawed, my primary reason is a frozen reptile has NEVER bitten one of my snakes. Mice are pretty aggressive.
Hope this helps! :)

My snakes react noticeably different when rats are offered as food, even little newborns. I think they recognize the smell as something that has the potential to really harm them. So most of my snakes will take extra precautions with rats, even frozen/thawed that they perceive is a danger.

But all of my snakes go ecstatic over rats, never had one to refuse them. All of my snakes are fed live or pre-killed...however I've got a few hatchlings that won't eat "moving prey". So I have to kill pinks before placing them in there. Other wise they'll strike and bite at it, but never eat it and eventually retreat to their hide when they realize it's no threat.

Thanks everyone

Thanks for all the reply's

My baby has just shed 2 days ago, so I don't think that could be it.
Tomorrow when I get home I am going to buy some fuzzy mice. Think we will stick to what we know he likes.

Truthful: I am kind of scared of him now, I never saw him strike at anything, I didnt even think he was capable of that, he is such a sweet baby. (ok he's getting big - not a baby anymore)

Well thanks everyone
