Hello all, am new to this and wonder how old my snake is. It's about 18" long. Also how do you tell the sex of the animal?
thanks

Well it looks about the same size as my amel wich is 28 grams. She is a 08 so im guessing yours is a 08 as well.

You can't really tell by the size. I have one snake that was born in 2006 and she's about the same size as one that was born in 2007.
Your snake looks like a yearling. As far as the sex goes, you're going to have to have an experienced breeder, vet, or reptile store person sex them for you, as it can be potentially harmful to your snake to try and do it on your own. There are two proven methods: Popping, and probing. Popping can be done while the snake is still young. However, popping is not 100% foolproof. Probing can be done once the snake is older. Again, it's not 100% foolproof, but it has a better accuracy rate than popping.

It seems like a yearling, it would appear that you are past the stage where "popping" is an option so it will have to be probed, a process that will require equipment and lessons. I recommend a herp vet or a specialized reptile pet store (you're not going to find anyone that can probe, or even dependably pop if it were a juvenile at a major chain...chances are small at best). If you don't plan to breed, you don't really need to know. Good luck and enjoy your new snake.

thanks

Thanks for the input everyone.
I found a very knowledgeable sales clerk at a small local pet store that has quite a few snakes of her own so I will probably get her to check the sex. Truth be told I don"t really care either way since I'm not going to breed, just curious.
