HELP!!! The cats were bad!

I need your help. I was feeding my two cornsnakes last night(a snow and a sunglow). They are only hatchlings from this summer, so they are about a foot long. I fed them in paper bags. I put the bags on a high shelf where I *THOUGHT* the cats could not reach and left them to eat. I know, I was very stupid not to look the cats out of that room, but I honestly thought that the cats could not reach, the shelf had to be 6 feet tall.

Well, I left the room to let them eat in peace, because they don't like to be watched. Most of the cats where with me so I did not think that the snakes were being bothered.

Disaster struck!! When I went back to see if they had ate a cat had somehow got to that shelf and played with the bags. They were both knocked over and opened. No snakes in the bags! OH-NO!!!! I'm positive at the cat did not eat them or even hurt them, so My husband and I search the hole room with no luck.

I am SOOO worried, they are still so tiny. They did both eat before they cat got them, so they have a full belly and the sunglow should shed any day now.

What do I do? How can I find them? Any sugestions?

Sorry about the long story, but I am really beating myself up for doing such a stupid thing as this.

Susan,

That's just aweful - I know how you must feel. It's most likely that as soon as they got out of the bags they made a b-line for cover. There is a fair amount of good "lost herp" advice at forum.kingsnake.com such as using flour on the floor to try to determine where they hang out, as well as placing pinkies in plastic water bottles (trying to get the snake to eat the pinky and "trap" itself insided the bottle) and more.

My own luck with recovering lost snakes is not so great, and the smaller they are the harder it is. I have an adult on the lose right now (she's been out for nearly a week now) and I stay up at nights with the lights low listening for her, but still no luck. The biggest problem your babies probably face is dehydration, so it'd also be a good idea to put a couple or few water sources around for them.

Good luck!

Sounds terrible :(

Are you sure the cats didn't have them? If not I'd re-search the room in as much detail as possible, lay traps, water and hides ... perhaps even warm hides.

Also put talcum powder over all your doows and along the walls to see which ways the snakes are moving and in which room.

At least if one is sue a shed you may be able to find the skin to prove he's not eaten !!

Good luck and keep us posted

GOOD NEWS!!!! THEY HAVE BEEN FOUND!!!!!!

I came home from work and was getting ready to tear the room apart again to look for them. Then I spotted 3 of my cats all huddled around the air vent staring at the same thing. I know soomething was up so I investigated. The first thing I saw was a skin shed, bust as I looked closer I saw both snakes huddled together get in the vent.

They are now back in their cage with not a scratch on them. I think they got cold and went looking for a heat source.

Less then 24 hours after the escape, they are back safe in their cage. I will never do something stupid like that again!!

Man, they sure did give me a heart attack!!!

Congrats on finding them!

A suggestion that I use: If I have to leave my snakes while they are eating, I put the whole feeding container back into their locked cage. That way if they get out of the feeding container, they are still safe.

Glad to know you found them and they were all right!!:D I have 2 babies, and one is an escape ARTIST. She escaped twice from her tupperware container and both times I found her the same day, under a shoe and slithering down the stairs. The other baby escaped when I left the cage top open for just a few minutes!! Thank goodness the baby was still on top of it!! I learned my lesson too. I have two cats also, but my cats seem to be indiffrent to them(or maybe it's just an act!! ).

congrats :D

congrats :D my snake was found last week he was outside in a lavender bush and he was freezing cold(poor little bugger) but hes fine now and i gave him 2 pinkys so hes good and fat now 2 :)
