Help!!! Unexpected Eggs!!!

Bug22baby

Snakes and more Snakes
So ya I was going to clean my snakes tubs and feed. Well one of my snakes that Ive had for 2 months laid eggs about 8 of them and some look like possible slugs and the rest look good. Well now what this was so unexpected I dont know where to start. I put them in a tubberware with moist papertoweling until I know what to do. I dont even know when she laid them exactly or if shes done. Any advice on where to start??? She supposably had double clutched this yr already... Is it possible to lay 3 ??? I have no had her with any other snake....

Those 3 on the left are definitely no good.

And yes, corns can have 3 clutches of eggs--just ask Jynx.

Looks like you might want to get that paper towel a bit more damp too.

BB...

You'll want to get them in a relatively constant temperature from 79-85 degrees. Keep them moist and put a lid on the container. Don't spray them to keep them moist...a temp change in the moisture directly on the eggs can be bad.

Both Sphagnum moss (NOT peat) and vermiculite are tough to find locally in metro Detroit...I know, I've had to mail order both. There was someone selling it at the Taylor show a couple months back, New Zealand Sphagnum was what they had, and it seems to work fine. You might be able to find Pearlite at a garden center...some folks use that. Just make sure it's sterile.

Best advice is to search these forums for detailed incubation info or get a copy of Kathy Love's Corn Snake manual. Kathy's book is the BEST investment you'll ever make in Corn Snakes, period. :)

Well I put some more damp toweling in the tupperware and there is a lid on it. I dont have any holes in it because I dont want the moisture to get out until I can locate some moss or vermucilite. I live in Mt. Pleasant and I guess I will look at home depots and meijers garden section... see if maybe they have something there. I also am testing out a make shift incubator. I have a foam cooler that I put a extra heat pad on the bottoem and gonna watch the temps.. see how stable they stay. If it works then I will put them in there. Im also gonna check in the morning for more eggs, but I believe shes finished... she already ate a mouse. If I knew she could lay more eggs I would of prepared for it, just didnt think after 2 and at her small size she would lay another. I also contacted the preious owner who stated that she had been bred with a snow motley. So I guess I have a Snow Motley X Hypo Motley eggs. Which if they survive and hatch Im assuming Ill get Normal Motleys het snow hypo. Thanks for the advice... any tips will surely be appreciated.

Oh ya I have both the cornsnake manuals, which neither of them say what to do when you have unexpected eggs. But I read the section on eggs and hopefully tomarrow after work I can hook them up properly. So far the cooler is holding at 82 which will work if it stays that way. Thanks

BB...

Right on Kathy's book...I meant to read up on the "normal" breeding section of it. Just treat your unexpected eggs as a regular "planned" clutch.

Seems you have a handle on it now...good luck with them (smile).

The 3 on the left that look bad... They probley are slugs, should I just toss them or should I keep them incubating too? The slug looking ones got kind of mishandled becuase they were stuck to the mom snake when I pulled her out. I left them in the egg box for now but I think I will toss them unless anyone thinks they are worth keeping??
