Help with Uroplatus! Worried about my leaf tailed geckos

IMO if I had gotten those responses on Geckos Unlimited and seen what had started, I wouldn't have posted there again!

If I had posted here about bringing home 2 baby corns and putting them in a tank together on sand with no extra heat and feeding them crickets, I would expect that kind of reaction and quite honestly, appreciate it.

Nobody big enough to get on the internet and irresponsibly buy their own reptiles needs a cuddle. They and their animals deserve to have their errors pointed out quickly for the best chance of the animals' survival.

You got some excellent advice on the GECKO forum, and my advice would be to fix their setup ASAP and give these beautiful animals the space and environment they need in order to thrive.

I used to work in a place that kept a few Uroplatus, and they did very well in pairs in enclosures 5' high 3' wide and 2' deep. We had some success breeding them too, much to my delight.

Please post updates pics when you get them a suitable enclosure! There are few things as beautiful as happy uros. :)

FOUND SOMETHING.

Found it here! Maybe this is your problem?

Heeey that's a really good idea about the shower! I'm going to give that a try tonight! We've been pretty good about humidity though, but yes their tails all point to dehydration, how interesting. We mist about three times a day and try to keep the humidity up around 75% (we have two hydrometers in the cage). I think tomorrow I am going to bite the bullet and buy the automatic mister at work (still almost $90 with our discount! ugh!) to mist them every three hours. Thanks for that article! Great find I appreciate it.

Woooow okay this is what happens when I can't get internet in a few days!

Firstly, I actually forgot I had posted at GU. I will trudge back there and deal with my verbal punishment over there.

But first an update.

They are now in a 3' tall enclosure. We're misting three times a day right now, trying to keep the humidity as close to 75% as possible. Will probably make the investment tomorrow on an automatic mister so that they can be misted every three hours. All the screen top has been covered with plastic with holes cut in for the two light fixtures which will also be their "air holes". Have done some research and found that these nightglo bulbs could easily be stressing them. Will be making another investment tomorrow to switch to a heat emitter, and then they will of course have their UVB light on during the day time.

Hopefully going to get my hands on some silk worms soon. But for now these new "super" crickets seem to be doing okay.

Even with their constant misting and having them drink off drops I place on their noses, their tails do show the signs of dehydration which is interesting... Hoping the every three hour mistings will turn that around.

The last three days the male has needed to shed. The last two days, his skin was literally hanging off him like a baggy sweat suit, you could see air between the layers around most of his body. He was laying near the bottom of the cage and I honestly doubted he was going to eat it off of himself, so I helped him out of most of it, which came off very easily except for his paw pads, which tonight I saw him trying to get off himself which is good...

Here's a picture of their new cage...

Instead of a mister, you could try a dripper. I think they're what are used for chameleons.

Their new cage looks AWESOME. I would personally try to get some more plants in there though. Looks a little bare.

I respect that. Hopefully they can help you get these guys taken care of. Even though some of them were just as upset as I about the situation and for the same reasons, I do believe they earnestly want to help you and actually can. Good luck getting them set up how they should be.
