hemp bedding

Hemp seeds contain the most nutritionally complete source of amino acids and EFA's known to man, but I don't know how they would react to the snake. Assuming they're overloaded with these oils though, using them as substrate I would assume NOT be a good thing.

If you're talking fibers (like hemp cotton), well... why would you want to use that?

Oh interesting!

100% Hemp

This is a bedding made from Hemp. It is quite coarse and wouldn't really do for burrowing but is good for lining the bottom of the cage for chins, degus and guinea pigs. It seems to be fairly absorbent and low odor but at £7.50 for a 30 litre bad it isn't the cheapest bedding here. Slightly dusty but it doesn't have the allergy factor of shavings or hay.
At the moment you can get it from The Pet Company.
Pros: Low dust and allergy. Quite absorbent and non smelly.
Cons: A bit rough on the little feet. Not that cheap or easy to get.
Dust Level: medium-low

Still looking for a better link though.

i definitely don't want a bob marley snake.just looking for a new type of bedding.i think the brand name is LifeMate All Natural Hemp .the bag of aspen i picked up had mites, which turned me off, and while another bag more than likely wouldn't have any-i'd still like to try something new for now.

by giving them the munchies? Then you might just end up with Phat snakes...singing the greatest of Bob Marley while wearing dreads and head bobbing

And what wrong wit' dat, Mon?

Picturing a cornsnake in one those red, yellow, and green knit caps the Rastas wear now has me sitting at my desk trying not to crack up.

You know, Spirit does a lot of crocheting....maybe she can make a business making small hats, coats, and "pants" for snakes.....

Well since hemp is the fiber of the cannabis plant (and contains no thc), you can rule out your snake getting the munchies. As nice as that would be though, for all non feeders...

I would assume though, since it IS a fiber it would not be mold or bacertia resistant, and knowing what moisture does to hemp (I work with it a lot in my crafts) it most definitely would not be safe incase of accidental ingestion. Unless maybe it was somehow ground up then made into sheets... maybe. I think.

Sure would smell pretty though (I LOVE the smell of hemp), and I can't see it being any more dangerous than aspen (though it would, I assume, be less dusty).

I don't know if I would use it or not. I love hemp, but maybe not so much for substrate. The hats would be cool though. ;)

For what its worth I use the hemp bedding sold by the brand name "Life Mate" here occasionally. I really like the lightweight texture of it, and it stood up to 2 weeks of not cleaning out my guinea pig while absorbing every drop of moisture and odor.

I use it occasionally mixed with aspen shavings with my feeder mice, especially when I'm out of my blessed aspen pellets.

Its really dust-free and odor free; aspen has a bit of a residual smell..this stuff just flat out doesn't have an odor that I can detect.

I don't remember the cost of it, but I got it at Petsmart in the "Alternative Bedding" secion.

I don't know how good it would be for a snake, as some of the pieces are pretty small. But its good for rodents at any rate.

It doesn't have a slightly sweet smell to it? I wonder if it could be made to good use in crafts anyway. lol

The substrate. Hemp comes in all sorts of things. String, paper, etc. I have tons of it, but nothing that could be compared to substrate.
