I'll be going out to Utica (east of Columbus) in May to find snakes, and would like some tips! They're for a 4-H demonstration on Native Snakes of Ohio, so I
would like some real snakes to show. I will have them less than a month, and then they'll be released where found. I'm going out two times--once to find snakes and set artificial cover, and another time to check the AC and find more snakes! However, I've never actually been herping, though I try to spend time in the woods.
So, any tips for finding snakes? I made a list of the snakes I could collect there (ones found in that part of Ohio, non-venomous, non-endangered), and have my bag ready with a snake hook, pillow cases, and gloves! I know that racers and water snakes are aggressive, so is it worth catching them or am I just going to get bitten all the time? Also, how many snakes should I expect to find--they have a large (50 acre) farm with a creek, fields, woods, barn, and grassland. What type of artificial cover should I set out? And should certain species be avoided? Thanks!
