Herping spots in California?

I live in the central valley ( Fresno X_x ) and I'm not too sure where I might go to spot some snakes.

I've seen a few up in the foothills ( Rattlesnakes is about it.. ) but those are nothing to go up to and pick up for an ameteur such as myself.

Suggestions on locations?

Fresno County is absolutely LOADED with snakes. Tons of gopher, king, mt. kings, rubber boas, garters, racers, coachwhips...there are around 20 different species of snake in Fresno County, including the rattlers.

Start hanging around pet shops that sell snakes. You'll run into herpers in your area. Go to a local pet shop and find out who supplies their snakes...NOT PetCo or another big brand store...a little shop with a local supplier.

I know a few herpers in your area. Some really knowledgeable people. Shoot me a PM, maybe I can get you in touch with a couple guys...

Tyflier is right-- just go out as dusk begins, or dawn, and you'll find many kinds of snakes. I live in Lake County and I find bagillions-- OK, maybe not that many-- of different kinds of snakes. I also used to find lots of different snakes when I'd visit my grandparents in Kings County.

If you don't mind the drive head over to sequoia national park, wander a bit off the beaten path, and I guarantee you'll find something. Wish I lived that close to sequoia, but I'm over in frisco.
