Like Mother, like son? Check it out. Momma has a pig tail and the son does too.

:eek1: That is freaky. Are you going to use them as feeders or breed them some more?

I'm going to breed them. I'll breed the male to a normal female and see if their offspring has pig tails too.

Phewww Sweat

Those mice got some crazy phenotypes, but what is the chance that all of the children will come out that way? Looks like we will need to create a punnett square to solve this one… Geno and pheno types… Gotta love biology. :crazy02:

That's awesome! I want some. :crazy02:

They'd be mice that I didn't have to chase round and round the tub trying to get their tails. I HATE smart mice who place their tail along the bottom edge of the tub where I can't grab their tails.

Have you noticed any other detrimental effects of the pig-tailed gene? Looks like the red one (female) has some weird eye coloring, or has gone blind in the eye facing the camera. Which is it?

I've had a couple of my older females to go blind with age, so I don't think its necessarily a bad thing. Just wondering if its perhaps in the same genetic area as the tail thing.

The whole 'white cat with blue eyes' deafness thing worries me when I see weird effects in other animals. Just makes me wonder what else is screwed up. =P

Kind of like my rat with weird fingers on one hand...anxious to see if it was just a fluke of development or if its truly genetic.

Looks like there are two similar mutants that cause this phenotype. One is "curly tail" and the other is "curly tail-like." (Must be mimics like our anerys and hypos.) IMO it is a good guess that you are seeing one of these. Both are recessive.

the original curly tail mutation produces variable percentages of curly tail mice even when homozygotes are mated together (usually less than 30 % affected mice are seen.) The incidence of affected mice born when ctl homozygotes are mated to ctl heterozygous mice is 26%, far below the expected 50%.

Also note that (as is quoted) it isn't always expressed in homozygotes, and when crossing homozygous parents together, only about 1/3rd or less of the offspring come out with curly tails. So divide all your "usually expected" results for recessive traits by somewhere around 2 to 4 and you should get a good idea of what to expect when breeding your curlys or hets. :)
