Hi I'm Marty, I'm 17 from hampshire UK.
I have always been interested in unusual pets, When i was little I kept stick insects and a couple years later kept Giant African land snails, I gave them to a experienced breeder though as I thought they wern't really what I wanted (I didn't even knew I was getting them.. long story)

Anyway a couple years ago I started keeping tropical fish and thats going cool.. I always thought about snakes but always too scared and thought it was incredibly expensive. But recently After going to places and holding some snakes I've grown to find them so fascinating and I decided. I want a snake now. lol.

I have done sooo much research recently and corn snakes sounds like a great beginner. And I think i'm lucky.

1/ I know a local small company called Vetark Professional (http://www.vetark.co.uk) Who do vitamins and other medical products for reptiles and exotic animals. and supply to loads of pet shops.

2/ My mum works for this company.

3/ I read many times that it is important to know a vet who specialises in reptiles. The man who runs Vetark is Peter Scott who is a Vet who specialises in reptiles. Apparently there are very few in the UK

My only problem is.. None of my close family (except for my older brother in law) wants me to get one. I just know that it would grow on them after a while seeing as they are such gentle docile creatures. But can anyone give me any tips on how to persuade them? They don't have phobias or anything. just uneasy about a snake in the house.

Any help would be great
Marty

About the best thing you can do to ease their concerns is to show them you can be a responsible keeper. Let them know how much research you have done, how you plan to keep them, etc. Maybe you could take them to an expo or a herp meeting, if there is one close. Here's a UK reptile site that should be able to help you locate one, plus help you find a corn snake once you have your family convinced :*)

well, when i wanted my first corn my WHOLE family said no. And now that i have one........my parents have changed there minds
1/ the nicest pet, usally dont bite (we've had hamsters etc. they all bit)
2/ quiet, we have a bird, hamsters with squakey wheels, and dogs
3/ feeds only every5-7 days
4/ only deficates once or twice
good luck on getting your first corn and welcome to the forum's~! John

I think I'm making some progress,

Yesterday I was at my sisters and she said she doesn't mind if I get a corn or not now lol.

And today we went to Porton Pet & Aquatics in Wiltshire (Anyone from south of england will probably know the place.) I go there a lot for my tropical fish and always knew they had a small reptile section,
Well since i've last been they've updated it and have a whole reptile section with loads of hatchlings, many of them corns, They were soooo cute! and Even my mum thought so, She bought a book for me about them and said she wants to read it too so I definately think they're coming round and I might well be getting my first corn soon!

Well it sounds like your moving forwards towards getting a corn. What book did you buy? John
