Hi all

Im Anthony im 28 from the UK, i have kept a corn snake and a tortoise now for 2 years.

Whilst away with work for a few days my corn snake escaped into the house i have looked in the easy locations but to no joy? Does any one have any ideas where she would hide and for how long? will she come out looking for food?

Hope to hear some ideas

many thanks

Anthony

Thanks for that reply there are some good ideas there for me to try. Will she move around at night? i fear she has got into a wall cavity or behind a kitchen cupboard and wont be able to find her way out?? Will she search for water and food?

I feel so bad and that i have failed and its ironic as i have just finished building her new viv

Hi, Anthony-
Yes, the snakes can move around at night. I lost a Ball once for 2 days and found out that she had been moving around in my closet; it was the rustling noises that tipped me off! There are also some good tips here:

I've heard of many good results with baiting, where the snake becomes lethargic after its snack and hangs out in the hiding place until morning when you can put them back in their viv.
Good luck!

I guess I'll put in my own two cents and tell you what I learned from my experience. I don't want to take credit because a lot of this I learned from other owners. Nor do I want you to take everything I say word for word literally. Some of the people that tried to help me were actually corrected by others, so I'll give you the advice that worked for me or that I think would work best.

Generally your snake won't be far (<i>at all</i>) from where she initially escaped. Corn snakes ARE considered nocturnal because they usually look for food in the night time. Depending on when you last fed her, she will get hungry and likely will start looking for food. When this time comes you could set up some sort of a trap involving a mouse, but be warned snakes can go for an extremely long time without food and she may just ignore the mouse.

I'm not sure where in the house you lost her, but if there is a pile of shoes or a bed to hide under or something she may have gone for that. You should know by now that snakes love to hide. Also, if this particular part of the house is generally cold, you could set up a nice hiding place (maybe even a familiar one taken from her cage) with a warm heating pad or something to provide heat underneath it.
I would set out some water, too. This won't help catch her so much as it will keep her from getting dehydrated.

I'd like an update on what you've done thus far. What, if any, posts have you read on this topic (besides the one jmksnakes gave you), and what advice have you tried from those posts? Where have you looked so far?

Mine escaped 3 times. Found her in the same place everytime. In the closet 3 feet off the floor curled up under a blanket. Good Luck. And keep looking.

Thanks all for the advice i guess all corn snakes are a little different in their own way so i will put all advive into action.

I have a two bed house with a hallway (where i keep the viv) the kitchen is near by and also the staircase and living room. I dont keep a lot of clutter so there are not a great deal of places for her to hide really although a little hole in the wall near a radiator pipe which is right under the viv.

I even emptied the storage cupboard today and found nothing. (really had good hopes for her being in there). In the hall where i keep the viv it is quite cool and te living room being the warmest. then the kitchen.

I have searched the upstair rooms inc cupboard and the boiler cupboard.

I fed her about 10 days ago, i have set out some water and a hide based on your advice near her viv under the hide i have put down a spare heat mat. i have got some bottles and pinkies today and laying traps is my next action

will keep you all posted and thanks again for the advice

Anthony

hey im no expert so dont have any tips on catching it but in relation to how long, my friends snake escaped just before christmas she tried all the tricks to catch it for a month or so afterward with no success however last week it was found in the kitchen sink... so dont give up hope!!! they are resilient creatures and im from ireland so the climate is similar.
good luck!!!

Hi all

Thanks for all your help with my escape'e. Just thought id post in to say my wife found her this morning, in kitchen cupboard in the camping cool bag.

She is now secure and warming up she looked a little dull in colour but i guess thats dehydration?

Thanks for all your ideas and help and i think i post some pics of her in her new home soon.
