Hi, I'm Peace&Colby, let me introduce myself for a bit.
I'm an animal lover [at least to most of my friend haha] and currently breed a small group of fancy mice as a hobby. I have develop an interest in keeping corn snakes and try to find some information before deciding whether to get one or not, and somehow get into this web site :3

Its nice to see an informative and active website such as these, looking forward to meet you all :3

Welcome!

Nice to see you are researching and you have researched into the right breed of snake! Corns are amazing overall. Variety of colors, personalities, and some are just fantastic eaters. I currently have one, she is a normal. Her personality is great and her appetite is amazing!

I'd like to just give you this bit of info before you become confused on how/where/what to find. You'll need 3 important items. A UTH, Thermostat, and a Thermometer with probe.

Now for a UTH, you can try browsing lllreptile.com. Great site and I highly recommend it. ZooMed Heatpads are good, I currently have around 6 or so and never once had a problem. There is also flex watt heat tape. If you are interested in that, pm me and I can fill you in on it. Also Amazon is really good with pricing.

This is a cheap and recommended thermostat. I currently use it and have yet to find any problems. http://www.amazon.com/Hydrofarm-MTP...d=1357050010&sr=8-1&keywords=hydro+thermostat

Thermometer with probe. I currently use a bunch of these. http://lllreptile.com/store/catalog...ers/-/zoo-med-digital-thermometer-with-probe/ or try amazon or other sites.

With these three things, you are ready to set up a tank. 10g for hatchlings, move up to a 20g Long for some time. Keeping expanding. My girl is in a 45g Long and she loves the space!
Also remember aspen shavings is a great recommended bedding for corns. Easy to clean, little dust, and safe. Remember Pine bedding is toxic to reptiles. Also feeding f/t is the best.

Have fun starting your addiction!
Any questions!?

LOL. Skully, I had that thermostat in my Amazon cart and it disappeared. Now I know why!

Peace: Skully just gave you a great bit of starting info. Corns are great. Welcome to the forum; you will find many many people here willing to help with any issues you come across.

I'm also more than slightly jealous of your location :)

I had it in my Amazon cart, and it said "only one remaining." Yet I sat around all day hemming and hawing about spending more $$; should I or shouldn't I?

I was just jokingly suggesting that because of your helpful suggestion, Peace&Colby purchased it while was waiting.

I'll add, and this is entirely a matter of preference on your part, but I started with a yearling (not quite a year old) and to me, it really made things easier for me. She was a good eater right away, she was used to being handled and wasn't a "hateling," and the little tiny hatchlings are quite good at escaping, from what people around here say. Again, entirely your call, just thought I'd throw a few more factors out there for you to consider. Good luck.

I would say it depends on the age of the person getting the snake, I have a hatchling he's only 5 months, and he's always been the sweetest little Guy, never a strike or a tail rattle and he eats like a champ! I thought about getting a yearling, but opted for a hatchling as I new I could handle taking care of him, and I can see him grow up.

like you said its a personal preference but I just wanted to state that hatchlings arnt much more difficult than an adult as long as they are already an astablished eater. :)

just my 2 cents though! :)

Its nice to have such a warm welcome here ^^ I'm thinking of getting a hatchling or a yearling, still need to research more to be sure. F/t or f/k is also what I'm planning to feed him/her, as I want my mice to have the most humane death as possible [and not injured the snake].

However with an under tank heater, do I actually need it with the temperature in my area? In Bangkok the temperature usually stays above 30C [86F] all year long, and can gone up to 40C [104F] in the hottest month of the summer and around 25C [77F] in 'winter' that only last about a week or two.

Also, with corn snakes, does gender really make much of a difference when keeping them? [like size, temperament, etc.]

Size is different sometimes. Sometimes female out grow a male but its all due to care etc. Not so much sure about the temperament, that's just personality of the snake.

You should be fine.
