My name is Amber and I'm new to both the site and to owning a snake. We have two baby corns...black one is Kaa and orange one is Rocky. Look forward to getting some helpful info! Thanks for reading!

Hi and welcome to the site, very cute snakes. But I have to say housing them together is not the best thing for the snakes. If one gets sick it will give it to the other, they stress when housed together, when older you can have unwanted breedings, and the list goes on. There are a lot of great people here so look around
and have fun.

Hi welcome to the site.Like he said tho keeping them together is very bad. They could die from stress/not eating.

dawww cute snakes and welcome! Im sure the site will help with your snake care! ive been here for a little while and everyone is always teaching me new things!

Welcome and Congrats on your new babies. Good choice making corn snakes your first snake. I see you already learned that corn snakes are like pringles. You will see we all suffer from the same addiction and unfortunately, we are all enablers.

Hi and welcome to the site. Pretty babies.

A bit of advice.. read the threads with "Sticky" in front of it in each section.. particularly the "husbandry and basic care" AND "Health" sections.. they are very informative.

Thank you all for the warm welcome! I did know about the reasons for not keeping them together, however we bought them together like that and they curl up in their hide together and we got them from petco so assume they are the same sex, but I can promise the first time I see an issue I will separate them we've had them for 2mo and so far so good!

Because they came from petco means that they are probably not the same sex. lol They do not bother to have their snakes sexed so you will need to have that done.

Is it true that one sex has a shorter distance from the tip of the tail to the genitals? I checked the distance and it's the same on both snakes, short stubby tails.

usually you cant tell! I got mine from breeders even and they ended up being different genders! (although i was hoping for two females!) You never know and while they might be okay if they are well fed for the first 6 or 8 months, if one turns out to be male he will mature sooner than the girl and can end up hurting her!

Either way they are super cute and i love their colors together :3 they need a romantic balcony to gaze into each others eyes from hah! soooo cute!

I understand you are resistant to separating them. They were together at Petco because that is how they keep their cornsnakes. Your snakes cuddle in the same place because that is optimal hiding and temperature not because they are friends. The fact that they didn't eat for weeks is indication that they are not happy together. They are stressed and keeping them together only stresses them more.

So what are the proper names for their colors? Someone mentioned them on here, but didn't say which name was for the black and which was for the orange.

Welcome neighbor! (I'm in Everett, about 30 minutes south of where you live).

The black & white/grey one is the Anery, the Orange/red one is the Amel. They are both considered a form of albino. Anery corns are sometimes called black albinos. They don't have any of the red/orange pigment. Amels don't have the black pigment.

Hmmm he has red on him though...hard to see in this pic but the black you see is actually outlining a dark red...right now it's slightly mohoghany-ish looking with some irridesint spots because I believe he's preparing to shed again and oh boy is he bright and GORGEOUS when he does! Will post a new after he sheds.

Ok, I looked at the first pic again & he looks like a normal/classic.
They are generally darker, & often look kinda velvety (IMO), they will lighten/brighten up as they get golder. :)

Thanks so much for the info...i felt bad not knowing what they were called. Yes he colors are velvety looking and I almost hope his colors never change, they are so deep and vibrant!

They will likely change, as he gets older. They still turn out very pretty.
How long have you lived in Mt. Vernon? (I love Skagit County!)
