Hi.. our very first snake

Hi,
My names Angela, me and my husband just got our first snake. We had a Leopard Gecko for a long time, and have really missed having a reptile since. We have been researching and also speaking with the guy at the petstore and decided to get a Corn Snake. We bought a beautiful little Candy Cane Corn Snake this morning. We have her in a nice little plastic container at the moment with a 50W heat light on her. We do plan on buying a UTH when she gets a little bigger but the guy at the pet store said its best to wait until we get her in her final tank since the heater is hard to move from tank to tank. Her temperature is sitting at about 80*F right now and we keep the room shes in very warm since we also have a Paradise Whydah Finch in there that likes warmer temperatures. We do have the light directed at one side so she can have a warm and cool side to her tank. We sprayed her tank down with some water, and have Exo Terra Forest Bark for substrate. And have a coconut house as a hideaway, a nice big water dish, and plastic leaves on the cool side to hide in. We bought her some frozen pinkies and have them in our freezer right now. The pet store guy said that he was probably going to feed her today but would probably wait a few days and let her settle in first. We do have a 20 gallon tank all ready for her but he thought it was best to wait until she gets bigger before putting her in it, since it might stress her to be in that much of an open area.
We tried to research as much as we can but any tips or anything we could do differently, or anything you think we should know that we might not have covered yet, we'd greatly appericate. And we look forward to getting to know everyone and their beautiful snakes.

You're going to find it VERY helpful in here. I just joined a few days ago and have learned so much extra in that short time. Everyone is super friendly which means its advice kindly given as well.

Congrats on your new corn! Pics?? And a name yet? Yes...I'm very nosey.

PICTURES PLEASE...just kidding take your time and welcome. I personlly don't dig lights because thy can melt through plastic and dry out the tank. Corns also don't need misting or high humidity, I would buy a small sized UTH and don't peel the plastic off it until you move her to the bigger tank, but you'll need a thermostat to regulate them since they get pretty hot on their own and rheostats aren't as reliable:)

Congratulations on your new baby, and welcome to the forum! It sounds like you are off to a good start. You might want to consider getting a small UTH for the smaller enclosure, as corn snakes do better with belly heat (but not from hot rocks). Something about corn snakes is very addictive, and I have a feeling that by the time your little one is big enough for the final tank, you just might be wanting to acquire another hatchling to replace her in the smaller one! Good luck!

aww thank you so much for the warm welcome! We actually had a hard time coming up with a name last night, me and my husband just kept playing with her throwing names back and forth, but we think we're going to go with Pumpkin. I wanted something cute since my mother, and my husbands parents won't even come upstairs at our house now because we have a snake up there  so I thought she deserved something cute so she didn't get a complex and shes an orange-ish colour and it just seemed to fit her. Shes my little pumpkin pie :).
And I'm a photo junkie too, I have lots of pictures of all our critters (and it is a few, I work at a pet store and any animal that gets sick or can't find a home I'm bad for taking home). I only have a few of pumpkin though, my batteries are starting to go dead, but I did get a few last night.

the first corn is allways the closest to your heart

True. I had my first one for a couple of months before I got another, but I notice the difference hahah.

Welcome to the forums! And I love that you picked Pumpkin as a name, so as to not give her a complex. lol

:wavey: Welcome to CS.com. Pumkin's quite the cutie. I especially love the kiss picture.
As long as there are a couple hides and plenty of foilage in her tank she shouldn't feel overwhelmed in it. You'll know when she's ready though. Another option for substrate is aspen shavings, a lot of keepers use it as it's fairly cheap, easy to clean, and light but solid enough for the tunnelers.
