hi,
i have had a corn snake for about 6 months now. i was given him from a friend who was no longer able to look after him. he is around 4 - 5 foot. i would like to know what type of corn snake he is but from all the pictures i have seen he does not look like any of them. i have started to think that he has been bred from two different types of corn snakes.

It's really hard to tell the morph from those pictures. If I had to guess, I'd say a normal or some variety thereof, but clearer pictures would help a lot. :cheers:

Type of Corn Snake

Hi There Snakeboy.

Your Corn seems to be what we in South Africa call a Striped Corn, was it
in some stage of the Blues when the Photos' were taken.

I wouldn't personally call it a stripe. I still say your snake is a Normal. Bear in mind I'm certainly no expert in these things, that's just my opinion.

hi, welcome to the forums.

I would say normal as well. The dark stripes you are seeing are just from the normal dark wash and stripes many (if not most) normals have. There's too much pattern in between the stripes IMO for him to be a stripe.

i know this may sound stupid to some people but i am airly new to snakes. if he is a baired rat x corn, does this make him a hybrid? :shrugs:

That's right, a hybrid is a snake resulting from the cross breeeding between 2 different spicies. This means any snake with 2 different species "in" him, like yours, or one with any other number of spicies compined "in" him. I didn't relize he was a hybrid. That would help explain the wierd, heavy striping and pattern.

i think this is correct but i just want to make sure. is it true that hybrids are infertile. i was not planning on breeding from my snake but i would like to know just out of curiosity. thanks

Infertility

I think that in the case of a Hybrid between a corn and a rat the amount of
genes / DNA common to both species should not interfere with fertility.

The comment above however is just a guess and I do not have any
scientific back up to my statement.

Well, I can't be sure on this one, but I'm sure someone else knows. Many hybrids with corns are fertile, despite what most would think. As siad, Ita all depends on what the other species in the hybrid is. I'm not sure about your snake, but I'm guessing he is fertile.

And I've been told before that many species geneticaly very different from corns can be fertile, while more closely related species will result in infertile off spring. I don't know why this is, but I remember it being mentioned before
