Hi, I'm gonna be getting a corn snake soon, which will be around 6 weeks old. I was just wondering what kind of things can you make hide boxes from, and also, can you give an approximate size for how big it should be- as in cm or inches? I'm gonna be getting a 42 gallon Vivarium and wondering how many packets of aspen it would take to cover a 36 inch by 18 inch area, and how much it would cost. Thanks for any replies :D
 
Hi Becca,

You can make hide boxes from lots of things. Some people use empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls. You can cut them in half lengthwise and get twice the bang for your "buck. Some people use empty tissue boxes. I use upside-down, clean, empty flowerpots with a "door" chipped out of the bottom edge. Also, lots of people use plastic water dishes that are hollow and the snakes hide under them. As for size, you want your snake to feel like it's hiding, so you don't want it to be huge compared to the snake. Your hatchling should like half a toilet paper roll just fine. The pots I use are the 4 inch variety and my snakes have liked them since they were tiny and still like them now when they're about 24 inches long. There are also lots of things for sale at pet stores, but they're more expensive.

As for the aspen, it depends on the size of the bag. You can get a huge bag of aspen in the small pet section of petsmart that will last you many substrate changes. I don't remember how much it costs, but I believe it's under $15.

Ok thanks- I've already cut up a toilet roll and was wondering if there are ant type of boxes that are the right size- eg. a cards box, one serving cereal boxes etc. Oh, are there any differences between male and female corn snakes? Also aspen sounds great- are there any problems with it? $15 is about £8 or something, right...and what's the english equivalent of petsmart...? :rolleyes:
 
Use a hide that is a little bigger than a curled up snake. What size is that?, you ask. Well that vary as the snake grows. So there is no true size.
Basic husbandry, there is not difference for male or female. And aspen is good for snakes/

I like these, and so do my snakes. They are cheap and the snakes feel more secure in them (my belief) :wavey:

I totally agree! Both my amel and my anery-lavender have one. They're perfect becase they are so low.
