Hide boxes I recently made...anyone think they are marketable?

Amanda E

I'm not sure if I should be posting this here or not, but it does have to do with husbandry. Anyway...

I hate most of the hide boxes that are sold at pet stores and don't like using cardboard boxes because they aren't heavy enough and can't be cleaned.

So...I got the idea to make my own hide boxes.

I based their design on Rich's water bowls, only using larger end caps, and of couse flipping them upside down. The only down side is I can't use them for adult snakes. They are too small for snakes much longer than 3 feet.

I like them. What does everyone else think? Do you think if I made some more people would be interested in buying them? I think so, but I have no idea for how much? $3 too much?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Here is one of my snakes in the photo for comparison. She is almost 38 inches long:

? about the snake (lol sorry...)

like the hide idea also, but the head markings on your snake really caught my eye...thats a beauty of a corn, Amanda :)

I kind of like the idea myself. I don't like the selection of hides for reptiles at most pet stores, either. They're overpriced for cheap materials that never seem to fit. Or they're too chinsy, and go along with the myriad of cheap aquarium decorations.

I make most of my own hides from things around the house. Toilet paper tubes, clay pigeons (my fav), old boxes, cracked flowerpots, anything that I can modify to fit in a snake enclosure.

But then again, a lot of those things aren't washable, which is something I do quite a bit of. Those look dishwasher safe and if you want, you can spray paint them colors so they're not so boring to look at. John Deere green anyone? =P

I don't think $3 is too much to ask for one. But if you have 20+ snakes, it could get expensive. What about $2? I haven't been to the hardware store or pipe store in a while, so I don't know how much they cost out of the rack, and no clue how much time it takes to do the hole.

Good idea though. It'd be nice to find something like that for larger snakes, cause a couple of my adults could sure use some better hides. =P

I know they aren't the best looking hides in the world, but they are washable and heavy enough not to get pushed all over the cage.

I did think of painting them, but then decided not to. I have one that doesn't have writing on it that looks better, but I haven't been able to find that brand again.

I do have one about twice the size of the one I showed in the photos. I made it for one of my adults. It works great, except it was $8.50. :( I don't think anyone besides myself would pay that much for a hidebox. I would love to have some more larger ones, but I haven't made anymore of that size just because it was too darn expensive for the one.

Actually it's just a little over $1 for the smaller ones, so $2 would give me a good profit, except it's my grandfather's tools and when I mentioned the possibility of money, he now wants me to split profits with him if I sell any. I can't hardly say no since they are his tools, but it would be nice to get more than $0.50 for each one. :D

I like them. What are the dimentions of that cap? I would be interested in them. Sell them in pairs, one for the viv and one for the dishwasher. By the way, most beautiful snake.

I personally don't find them pleasing to look at, but that isn't what matters to a snake. I think they would be good for rack systems. I wouldn't want them in any of my display tanks, though. I prefer the more colorful hides for that...

Of course, that is just my preference.

How'd you ever guess???

I recently bought a BUNCH of baked potato foils to make hatchling hides from. They turned out great! I'll have to take some pictures soon. The good thing is that I can sell them for less than the other hatchling hides I sell. They are smaller, so they are cheaper to make.

Thanks for the snake compliments.

As for the hide boxes, they are about 2 inches tall and 4 inches in diameter.

They seem small for a 3 foot long snake, but my 3'+ snakes all seem to like them still. I guess it's true that they do really like to squeeze into small spaces.

Our hatchlings both have nice commercially made hides but prefer to spend their time inside paper towel roles which have been cut in half lengthwise.

Our Anery even uses his commercial cave hide as his own personal toilet! After a feeding we have to lift his hide to see if he's pood yet. We're thinking we should put a really tiny copy of Reptile Magazine and a small lamp in there since it's his own personal WC.

Cheers,
Jason

That's too funny!!! I hope my snake's not able to read, because she might get ideas! [LOL]
