Hides and bowls for LARGE snake?

I've come to the point where it is impossible to find anything for my adopted snake; he's just too big (over 5 feet, and a body so thick I can't get my hand around him. He IS fat, but we're working on weight loss. He's lost about 10 grams since I adopted him haha)!

The largest hide at the 4 pet stores near me does not have an opening large enough for him. I bought one anyway, and spent a great deal of time widening that opening, but once my snake got in, he couldn't get his whole body in, so that was a waste anyway.

As for bowls, everyone says to get one they can get their whole body in...no such thing exists! The largest at any store, he can get maybe half his body.

So what do you do for bigger snakes? Mine is not even that big, and what about pythons? I sthere a site which sells these things for large snakes?

Try using some pasta or soda boxes for hides. Not as appealing as some of ones at the pet store, but they work. Also, use a dog bowl for water. They work great! He doesn't necessarily need a dish yo soak, so something he can get half his body in, should be fine.

Good Luck!

^Yeah that's what I have now. I have a rabbit nest as a hide (it's all that fits him), cut holes in shoe boxes, and have a large dog bowl, but it looks so ugly :(

I happened to find a 75 gallon tank, so I really wanted to make it look nice. I know the snake is just as happy with a shoebox as a fancy hide, but I was hoping to make it attractive, as this giant tank is chilling out in my living room.

Even the Exo Terra X-Large Reptile Cave is too small? Or do the stores near you not carry them? I've read a few threads on here discussing making your own hides out of Sculpey Polymer Clay. I'm sure if you do a search you'd find some interesting ideas. A large dog bowl may be your only option there, however, like Wayne said he may not need to do a full soak, especially if your humidity levels are good and if you offer a wet box around shed time.

If your guy is too big to fit in a hide, use one of the plastic containers that hamburger comes in from Wal Mart. I found that the 10 pound container works great for bigger snakes. Just wash it real good and cut a nice big hole in it. As far as a water bowl thats big enough for him to soak in, you'd be amazed at what a corn can get into. I have 3 footers that can fit them selves inside little sour cream containers. If you want to get him a bowl big enough to soak in use a 4 quart tote and fill a little less than half with water. Or do like we do for the boas and ball pythons, get a small cat litter pan. :)

The girl inside this one is at least 5 foot and weighs almost 1200 grams. She uses it as a laybox. LOL

You don't always have to rely on local stores..you could always check out reptile shopping web sites..like "Reptilesupply.com" and various other sites..they might offer bigger hides then ones found in stores.. :0)
