How long does a shed skin last? Not as in the actual process, but I've had Rose's first shed in my room for more than 3 years now, and I started wondering: How long does it take for a shed to decompose?

How long does hair or fingernails take to decompose? I believe when left protected from the elements and general wear it should last quite long.

Ah, I never thought of it that way.

So it should last pretty long, then. It's in a little box on a shelf. :) It's pretty special to me because Rose is my first snake and it's her first shed. It's a pretty good one, too. :D

Nice to know I'm not the only one who is attached to the sheds :grin01: It feels criminal to throw them in the bin after my babies have worn them (and used so much effort getting them off!) that I just have to keep them all. I believe they do last a very long time though.

I actually used one to scare off a mouse that was wanting to set up housekeeping in my last place. Interestingly enough after laying out the shed in the path the mouse normally used, I never saw the thing again :)

I just did this last night to try to scare off a mouse. I think he is nesting in my sofa, so I threw two fresh sheds back behind it. I hope it works.

Plissken, I don't think I can keep them all, they'd clutter a lot. ;) But I do keep the "memorable ones", like first shed.

I guess the mice are smart enough to stay out of snakes' way, then. ^_^

They will eventually become brittle and start to break apart. I have 2 sheds hanging on my cube wall. One is 3' and the other is about 4'. Both are from my first snake, and I have them here to prove better than pictures that I have snakes. They have been there for at least 4 years now and when touched you can tell they are starting to get tot he point that touching them will cause them to break. If you place them in a box that you can keep out humidity and such, they should last longer. If you want to keep them forever, you can build an air tight glass box and make it a vaccuum before totally sealing it.

I think that just about everyone that keeps snakes has at least one shed that they have kept from their snakes.

I'd be buried in skins if I kept every one. I've given a few away to people who want them, but usually I just chuck them in the trash.

Oh, I have my sheds from my three babies -- Fritz is now old enough to only shed twice a year, but the other 2 are still growing, so I save them...and I put them in baggies with the name & date...and my students are going to measure them and plot a growth chart for each snakey-poo. :)

Bellerouge (almost 3 mos old?) finally shed this past weekend -- a perfect, beautiful shed. I was happy to find it because it'd seemed like she was PMSing, too, last week...:p
