Holy Egg Folicles Batman!

Sienna, Trogdor & Melony
Oh my! We just made a startling discovery here. Sienna, our EIGHT (and a half) MONTH OLD normal corn snake is ovulating. That's right, ovulating! We noticed she was looking a little chubby in her rear half lately, and made the decision to switch her feedings to once a week thinking she was just getting a bit too much to eat. Well, I had her out, and she was slithering around over my hands, when I felt something that really surprised me. So I repositioned her, and felt again. Sure enough, it felt like the strand of pearls. I almost fell over. I raced to get my cornsnake manual, and sure enough she shows all the signs. Am I even counting right? She hatched the first week of October 2004, and it is now the 2nd or 3rd week of June 2005... thats 8.5 months, right? It seems so early, I mean, I know she's 30 inches, but she still seems way too small to even think about producing eggs (or folicles). I guess this does explain a lot of things around here though...Trogdor has been very reluctant to eat lately, and is always hanging out on the side of his viv closest to Sienna's viv...even trying to climb that wall in broad daylight (a new development). The pheromones must be flying around pretty thick in there.

So my question is: should I be worried? She should just reabsorb the folicles, right? I would just be crushed if anything bad happened to her. Hopefully I'm am just stressing over nothing. *sigh*

I had a 135 gram female form follicles this year as well. I was worried also, but luckily she reabsorbed. I hope Sienna does so also!
Even if she doesn't reabsorb, she'll most likely just lay a small clutch of slugs. Good luck with her!

Well, its is reassuring to hear someone else has a small snake doing the same thing. I sure hope Sienna reabsorbs them too. The small clutch of slugs wouldn't be all that bad, but I just worry about her getting egg bound (can that even happen with just slugs?). I know I shouldn't worry, nature will just take its course, but this is the first time I've dealt with anything like this, and I feel very...not knowledgable in this area. I sure hope everything turns out just fine.

Good question! My 11 month old males are going crazy all over the tops of their vivs. I hear them falling down all night! I have a yr and 1/2 old female that is big, but not close to breeding weight. I guess she's driving them mad?? :shrugs:

Katie, they can become eggbound with just slugs. It's been suggested before that slugs may be harder to expel than eggs due to their flaccid nature. But, like you said, there's no need to worry, Mother Nature, no matter how many names we call her, will take her course;)
I'm sure all will be well!

I had a late '03 ovulate this year as well. I'd say she's in the ballpark of 200g though every time I go to weigh her, its after I'd fed.

Scared me good however when I felt the 7 eggs within. I kept wondering why her back end kept getting bigger and bigger, when I was feeding her the same amount as usual. Got her out for a cage cleaning and it was quickly made apparent. She re-absorbed them thankfully, and looks like she's fattening up for a 'second clutch'. :eek1:

Although a 2002 Reverse Okeetee I gave to a friend for a pet just laid 8-9 eggs without having been bred. So I guess its just personal preference what the female does with them.
