Can't Keep A Secret
Since I am starting to expand my collection, I am starting to toy with some ideas of making a basic (verrrrrry basic) snake rack, which led me to this question:

Is it better to use plastic or wire shelving to house the tubs?

I have seen both in use here around the forum, so I can't imagine that either would be "wrong". However, are there any precautions to consider once a heat source is added for either material? (If it makes a difference, I currently have Ultratherm undertank heating mats.) Although I do a lot of reading, lurking, and asking questions, I am still relatively new to snakes and I like to be thorough before I do anything.

In the long run, I hope to eventually put together melamine shelf-style racks, but for the meantime, I want to begin with something simple. It's only going to hold three snakes to start, and I am on a bit of a budget.

I would go with the plastic shelving to house the snake racks. The plastic and solid surface will hold the heat better then the wire.

Mine are wire, and they work well enough...

If I could go back and do it again, though, I'd probably go plastic. The solid shelves are much easier to work with/on, for one, and, like Wayne was talking about, they'll hold in heat much better... Probably making one thermostat per shelving unit a much more feasible plan. I tried this on my 4-shelf wire rack, only to discover a 12-15 degree difference from the top viv to the bottom viv (about 5 ft distance).
