homemade water bowls

We were working with clay in my art class at school. Well I decided to make a bowl. We glazed it and put it in the kiln and stuff and when I brought it home I decided I wanted to use it for a water bowl for one of my snakes. I don't think this would be a problem, but I wanted to make sure. Does anyone know if a glazed clay bowl be bad for a snake? Any opinions?

I took pottery in High school and I remember a disscusion I had with my teacher about different glazes. There are different types of glazes some are safe and some are not. (for humans, so i would assume the same goes with snakes.) The ones that I remember that are not safe is the Low temp glazes. Which tends to be the brighter color glazes. I would check with your art teacher and see what type of glaze you used and look it up on the net or call the company.
Hope this helps.

I think it will be safe because it has no odor, couldn't chip, would always stay hard, etc. And it holds water really good. My teacher put the clay in extreme high temps to harden the glaze. Oh yeah, I used clear if that matters at all. I will ask though and look up the type of glaze I used to be sure. But I bet it'll be ok. Btw, what problems could there be with any glaze?

Some glazes are toxic, and could poison your snake. Please check to make certain the glaze you used is non-toxic.

clays and sealants

this all sounded very familiar. here's a nice thread from way back. It discusses various clays and glazes. Envirotex seems to be a popular and very safe sealant but is expensive. Other polyurethanes were recommended but will need a longer curing time (weeks?). For a water dish I would feel more confortable making a shell for a disposable deli cup or regular water bowl then cleaning, sanitizing, or replacing the actual dish when necessary instead of just using clay and sealant. Also, is the untreated clay porous? Could it absorb cleaning agents, harbor bacteria, etc? Not familiar with clays or pottery firsthand. Just some ideas I'm throwing out.
