Hot snake

Gintha

*stretches* I'm out!
Hunter is in blue, hes at the stage where hes milky all over. Hes been at the cool end of his viv all day, but when I picked him up he felt quite warm. I felt the substrate where he was laying and its cool. I've never noticed a temperature change in the snakes due to shedding and never read about it. Should I wait a couple days or take him to the vet and see if she can help? Shes not a herp vet, closest herp vet is a 4 hour drive away ~,~ But she has been studying snakes for me for a few months to be able to do some basic stuff if / when its needed. he seems alert, once I wake him up hehe, and hes been as active as normal, but this morning he had his head in the water bowl for a good 15 minutes, just laying there, not drinking or anything, I thought he might have been asleep. I'm probably over worried, as usual hehe... but hey... they're my kids! =)

I dunno. I'd measure the temps on the cool side, from the glass and from the top of the substrate. Since there is nothing a snake can do to significantly raise body temps, he had to have gotten warm somewhere in the tank. If the temps are good, I wouldn't worry about it.

I was worried he may have a fever. I've been in the 80* F room all day hehe, his tank is 80 cool 85 warm, at the surface where he'd be. His belly was REALLY warm, warmer than the glass surface temp above the UTH. I suppose the cat could have been sleeping against the glass and he may have been stealing her warmth... but I still worry about fevers ~,~

Snakes can't get fevers. That's why you see people advising very warm temps for snakes with R.I., or any type of infection. Since snakes can't raise their own body temps, they need external temps high enough to fight infection.

I didn't think they could get fevers hehe, thats what worried me =P

No evil sun in here!! *hiss* LOL I have beach type grass mats over all my windows =) Its kept very dark in here normally to help with my sleeping problems, the only light the snakes get is from lamps and Hunter's lamp is 4-5 feet from his viv.

I just took him out again and he seems fine, must have been leaching heat from one of the cats *sigh of relief*

Is there nothing within one of your 300 snake books that might be of help? If not, perhaps you need to look elsewhere for your knowledge; as we all know, it is the quality of the written word that matters, rather than the quantity.

Either way, good to know the snake is acting fine.

*blinks* I'll just ignore that.

Hes curled up in his water bowl right now, chilling out LOL.. needs a snake sized beer and some corn nuts I think =P He let me hold him for an hour earlier without even attempting to bite me, or musk me, or poo on me... not even a tail rattle LOL. Very odd little fellow today. I'll post a new pic of him in the forums after he sheds... needa let Caroline see how big he is =) Hes almost caught up to Treasure!

Thanks to those of you that posted helpful posts =)

That's funny. I'm not a big fan of direct sunlight myself. Sometimes when I'm forced to tolerate it, I'll use my best Gollum/Smeagol voice and hiss: "We hateses it, Masssster! It burnses us!" Some people get it, others just scatter in fear. :grin01:

LOL such a cutie!

Sun turns Gin into a lovely, cripsy, red colour... got a horrible burn on my shoulders once from the sun, was nasty... all peeled deep and bled a lot and scarred bad ~,~

Hunter seems okie today... no where near as hot as yesterday, and hes on the UTH side LOL.. think hes trying to confuse me... evil snake!! Hes actually getting a bit better with handling, when hes blue I can hold him fine, curls up and goes to sleep... normally he'd be trying to leap off me and slither away hehe.
