where can i get rubbermaids from then havent heard of them in the uk

I agree that aquariums are quite heavy, not to mention expensive, but how tall do rubbermaids come. I would rather recommend housing a corn in an aquarium or a custom made setup, if you have the money. That's just my opinion. Im more into spoiling a few snakes with really great enclosures, than have many snakes in small enclosures. just my opinions.

Well no offense, but your ideas of spoiling have nothing to do with the corns needs, only your own feelings. As long as the needs of the snake are met, wether it be in a custom enclosure or a glass tank or a rubbermaid, the snake is happy and can survive. They have no clue that they are being as you put it "spoiled"

Using tanks is my idea of the opposite of spoiling since they provide crappy ventilation, dry conditions and crap heating insulation.

Rubbermaids can be bought like over a foot tall.

bmm

Not high class?!?!

Bmm is correct about the rubbermaids. Ventilation is better, sanitation is better, and the tub size can grow with the snake. You can get a dozen shoe boxes, four sweater boxes, and even a tub (bigger than a 20 gallon glass aquarium) for the same $30-40 that will only buy one 20 gallon at any pet store.

I resent the implication that racks are crap. Every one of my snakes now reside in a rack system and seem to be perfectly "well adjusted". Oh, and as far as appearance, their rack system is built entirely out of oak and is nicely stained to match my furniture. It even has a built in light switch and an equipment rack. I like to think of it as the "Upper East Side Penthouse" of luxurious corn living!

Can't get more spoiled than that. ;)

Can someone please explain what a Rubbermaid actually is?
Oh, and can someone translate the gallon sizes into feet and inches...
i`m using a 3ft glass aquarium aTm for my yearling.. put a lot of effort into making the interior look natural, providing 5 separate hides, 2 water bowls, a climbing frame (old mug tree hehe) and using a combination of heat mat and heat lamp to get a heat gradient and a day/night temp difference as well.. Chione seems to be happy in there but i`m intrigued as to what these rubbermaid things are.. especially as a 3ft tank isn`t really big enough for an adult corn so in a years time i`ll be needing a bigger enclosure anyway.

Bmm

I dout they have Ace Hardware in the UK. They don't even have it in Canada. But the store in Theif River Falls they give away free popcorn.

Here's an example . . .

of my newest rack system, there are tubs as an example on two of the shelves. These are Sterilite tubs, but they are pretty much the same as rubbermaid. You have to burn or drill the holes yourself. Hope this helps.

I dont once remember saying rubber maids were crap. Maybe rubber maids are good for what you want your snakes for. If rubbermaids are tall enough for branches and **** then i may look into them. I use an aquarium, and ventilation, humidity and sanitation is not a problem. By spoiling, i mean providing my snake with the most realistic and natural habitat i can. Maybe you should try that sometime, Bmmm. But whatever...if you guys keep your snakes on newspaper and stuff in small plastic containers, then that's your problem. I just think that a true snake enthusiast would provide the best home for their snakes. It's a shame, really.

sorry if i came off rude, but i was a little offended by "BMMM", but I
would like to know how tall rubbermaids come, and if anyone out there knows the largest size. thanx!

Actually, i agree with you there, to a degree.
Like you, i prefer to have just one beautiful setup rather than having a whole range of critters in simple setups, for one thing i dont have the space to have loads of different tanks and stuff.
I`ve gone to quite some trouble to make the best setup i could for my snake... partly to suit the snake and partly so that it looks great to visitors .
Only problem i have now, is figuring out just where i`m gonna put the next viv!
and the one after that
and the one after that one
and the one after that one too.

Perhaps not.. space is tight and i personally dont like to see loads of tanks or containers crammed in to a small room.
There was this guy on another site like this one posting a piccie of his reptile room.. there were tanks and containers everywhere.
It looked awful. Id be ashamed to have such a dreadful mess in my house.. and people were congratulating on having such a fine collection!!! Each to our own i suppose. I guess for many people, Herping is an addictive hobby, but for me , my snake is a fascinating pet and its home is a great looking decoration. I guess you feel the same Jake.

Blito, Im on the exact same level as you. I dont think its right for people just to be putting down newspaper and a water dish. I personally enjoy going to great lengths to make my enclosure look and feel as natural and beautiful as possible. I would love to have many snakes, but when you put money into making a nice terraium, you don't have alot of dough for new snakes. I would really like to see your enclosure. I would like a pic, but if you dont want to send one, thats fine.

I'm sort of confused as to how people using rubbermaids for their enclosures got lumped together with people who are just "putting down newspaper and a water dish." Many people here use rubbermaids because they are cheaper than glass aquariums, provide better ventilation, and will hold humidity better. Rubbermaids come in a large variety of sizes, and can easily be found larger than a 20 gallon long tank. People can use the same variety of substrates, hides, branches, etc. in them as they would in glass tanks. In fact, many people are buying rubbermaids or the like so that they have more money left to spend on their snakes. I have seen many pics here of people's enclosures, but I can't recall seeing any that just had newspaper and a water dish. They all had hides, and most had something to climb on.

If you want to make your enclosure beautiful, that's fine, just remember that it's for your enjoyment, not hte snake's. As long as it's functional and meets all the snake's needs, your snake doesn't care about its beauty.

And I think you may be thinking of paper towels, not newspaper. Many people here do use paper towels for their substrate. It has its pros and cons, just like anything. It's not as pretty as, say, aspen, and snakes can't tunnel in it. But it is much easier to clean, and it prevents accidental ingestion of the substrate, both of which are beneficial to a snake's health.

Please, everyone, just think before you start attacking other people's ways of housing their pets. As long as they and their snake(s) are happy and healthy, it must be just fine.

Kate. let me just clarify that i`m not attacking anyone on this site.
Everyone i have shared posts with on cornsnakes.com has clearly had their snakes health and wellbeing at the top of their lists of priorities.
Jake and I clearly are in a similar position regarding enclosures- our tanks are on prominant display within our homes and so have to be pleasing on the human eye as well as a suitable home for our respective critters, but please don`t think for one minute that i would critisice the people who use this service just because they do things differently to me. I am reletavely new to this hobby and i`m learning all the time, but the one thing i do know already is that the majority of the people here love their snakes and are doing everything they can to keep them healthy and happy. :)

Jake.. i`ll post a piccie of my setup in a few weeks... got to go buy a digital camera first LOL :)
chance you could share your piccies first? :)

jakethesnake001 You are doing those things for your corn but having paper towel VS bed a beast or whatever MAKES NO DIFFERENCE TO THE SNAKE.

AGAIN

IT MAKES NO DIFFERANCE TO THE SNAKE. It makes a differance to people like you, who presume that because others aren't going natural, the snakes aren't as happy. Its your own emotions not the snakes you are trying to please. But you won't even understand that. I already said it once. Snakes dont care between aspen, bed a beast or paper towel because guess what ? NONE OF THOSE ARE NATURAL! Nothing we buy for the snakes is natural. You cannot compare a captive animals life IN ANY WAY with a natural one. It doesn't make sense. But you would know that if you studied snakes in a way other than husbandry and we wouldn't be arguing over the fact the snake doesn't know between paper towel and bed a beast.

You people are claiming things with absolutly NOTHING based on the true instinct of these serpents. They can't even mentally comprehend the difference between shaded plastic and tank glass. My rubbermaids are larger than 20 gallons by far. But you are honestly trying to tell me a snake can tell between clear plastic and clear glass? Please explain. Using facts. Thanks.

You can use plastic coat hangers, branches or sticks. The snake doesn't know the differance. Telling someone else that they aren't keeping snakes properly because they use sterile enviroments is going to embarass you in the long run because it makes NO SENSE. Again IT MAKES NO SENSE. The snake cannot tell between a sterile plastic branch and a real one, these snakes DIDN'T COME FROM THE WILD they are living in captivity and they need to be treated as such. Sterile enviroments, proper heating gradients, clean substrate, and parasite free, healthy food. Your snakes are not healtheir because you have bed a beast or whatever you use for substrate. I promise you that.

A TRUE herper learns what is most healthy for its charges. Not what is most pleasing for their eye and ego. If you think you are some serious long time herp expert because you use tanks, talk to some of the BIG snake keepers who have been around for 20+ years. Most will tell you, TANKS ARE FOR FISH! Because they have learned with YEARS of experience that tanks suck. They DO provide CRAP ventilation unless you have drilled holes in yours? Its not a opinion, its fact. Tanks have crap ventilation. You can't argue it, unless you drilled holes. Frankly I don't think you are even understanding why tanks can't have good ventilation. You jsut "think" yours does even though anyone with a little science know how can tell you why it doesnt. People who keep very expensive Chondros just plain won't use tanks. Why? Because the Chondro needs high ventilation and humidity and tanks cannot provide it. Can a corn live in one? Sure. And I am sure yours is great. But you cannot just tell people rubbermaids are crap unless you ahve the FACTS because basically you just told every single person who has made the corn industry they are wrong. But yeah I guess you know more about this species than they do?

I am not typing on this thread anymore. You aren't even understanding what I am saying and you are anthropomorphiz and you are speaking without knowing the facts. Before you bash peoples housing you should learn more about what has proven sucessful for so many years to the point that its actually HEALTHIER for the snakes to live this way.

Look at my tortured snakes! Oh no, nobody tell this guy he is in plastic not glass....he won't be as happy!!!!

<img src="http://members.rogers.com/mattl/enclosure2.jpg">

I am soooo cruel. It must be hell to be a snake in that rubbermaid....wow....they must hate being so clean and germ free.

bmm

I don't have a corn so correct me if iam wrong. Wouldn't corns like
a branch or two to climb on or a couple of rocks two help there shedding? again correct me if iam wrong.

Bmmmmmm!

Bmmm, i don't remember once calling your way of doing things wrong. Everyone is entitled to have their setups how they want. As for the paper towels, do you not think that a snake would rather have substrate which he can burrow through, or plants which he can hide under, instead of being in the open or in a hide box 24/7. It sounds like you are the one criticizing others, but who pointing fingers? It seems to me that you may have some issues with your setup, because you are clearly blowing things out of proportion. All i said was that i would rather give my snake a great, natural enclosure, where he can get descent exercise, and stimulation, rather than a simple enclosure. I understand that if you are breeding or you have many snakes, really nice terarriums can cost alot of dough real quick. I am just saying that I personally would rather have nicer enclosures. I don't know why this offends you so much, but im sorry if you took something the wrong way.

Blito, i too don't have a digital camera, but i will borrow one from a friend ASAP. Looking forward to your pics!!! Happy herp keeping!
